>> the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. >> beloved italian restaurant fico says it will combine with its sister restaurant in an effort to cut costs. hello again everyone! i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach. >> from expensive rent to utilities and rising staff costs, this restaurant and really others across the city have a lot to face in order to keep the doors open. new tonight as ktvu is. betty yu reports the final dinner service for k fico alimentari will be this week. >> k fico elementary opened to great fanfare in 2019. it was the casual spinoff of its wildly popular original and sister restaurant k fico, located upstairs. but in the last six months, owners matt brewer and david nayfeld decided to absorbd close its dinner service in its current form, we still plan on keeping it for an event space, but in its current iteration, it just is not sustainable. given,

you know, i think a lot of the rising costs, in which it announced on its instagram comes months after alimentari cut prices by 20. >> it also recently cut its dine in fee in half, something it instituted to help ensure better wages and full benefits for workers in 2021. >> we have seen our payroll continue to rise. we can manage it as best we can, but when we're not seeing the additional revenue come in, people are choosing not to dine out as much. and it's not just us. it's a citywide issue. >> one of its most striking costs is electricity. brewer said he used to pay about $7,000 a month to pg and e between two restaurants before the pandemic. that same bill is now about $11,000. the two k ficos will merge upstairs, and the downstairs operation will focus on to-go orders and serve cocktails, as well. san francisco resident jessica roman is a loyal >> we heard it was closing, which is devastating. a lot of

people have moved out of the city. i feel like, you know, k fico attracted a lot of like corporate clients and there's fewer corporate dinners. >> ultimately, k fico said it's committed to evolving and thriving in san francisco. >> we're bullish on the future of san francisco. we just know it's going to take a little bit of time right now. >> elsewhere, k fico is still expanding. it recently opened a market in menlo park, not far from its sister restaurant there, and the owners are planning to open another k fico at the mission rock development in san francisco in 2025. in san francisco, betty yu, ktvu, fox two news and new at 11. >> fico also says the state is expected to clarify language in a new law banning junk fees tomorrow. the law will apply to fees for online ticket sales and hotels. it's also expected to apply to restaurants and bars, which will be barred to the cher the meal that they will have to raise prices to make up for the loss,

potentially driving away customers. that law goes into effect july first. >> a street party in downtown san francisco, held on the first thursday of every month, is starting up this week. second street from market to howard will be closed for downtown. first thursdays aim to bring life back to the area at night. artist stephanie mufson, known for building floats for parades including the chinese new year parade, is creating a giant disco ball for the monthly event. it's going to be hanging from a crane to enhance the party atmosphere. >> see cranes all along the skyline. so it was a perfect combination to really bring flair and fun to the street. >> organizers say there will be family friendly entertainment and activities for all ages. this event is free to attend. the nonprofit civic joy fund is providing $1.5 million to keep first thursdays going for a year. organizers are asking people to rsvp online, a plan to attract colleges and universities to downtown san francisco is before the city's board of supervisors, mayoral candidate and supervisor asha

sapphire introduced that measure to offer incentives for public institutions to set up in neighborhoods such as the financial district, union square, and south of market. >> sapphire said that phoenix saw its downtown flourish in. >> hundreds of police officers began making arrests tonight at columbia university in new york city. school officials made the decision to call police after protesters took over hamilton hall yesterday. the university says the building was vandalized and blockaded tonight. officers had to break a second floor window to make their way inside. protesters were then led away in zip ties and then put onto busses. columbia university is now cleared of protesters. however a large police presence is expected to remain on campus at least until may 17th, two days after commencement. in a statement tonight, columbia university saying in part, the

decision to reach out to the nypd was in response are champi. we have made it clear that the life of campus cannot be endlessly interrupted by protesters who violate the rules and the law. the safety of our community, especially our students, remains our top priority. protests pro-palestinian protests are non colleges across the country, and one of them at cal poly humboldt has now come to an end that protest started a week ago and was broken up by police officers overnight, some of whom traveled north from the bay area to provide mutual aid. >> k a f tv reporter adelma ruiz got caught up in the sweep of protesters and was among those detained. she was then photographed and transported from the school by law enforcement. she says she lost one of her phones she was using to broadcast and record what

photographed she lost one of her phones she was usings well as away, as well as when they were, moving my hands towards behind my back. it slipped my back. it slipped out of my pocket and i couldn't get it. obviously the officers didn't get it. so there is a piece of news equipment out there at cal poly humboldt right now. >> humboldt county put out a call for helprcement partners un the state. san francisco police sent ten officers and a sergeant. the san francisco office also sent four deputies, saying law enforcement from the city has experienced with mass protests.

>> san francisco, we do get a lot of opportunity or numerous opportunities to work with mass arrest, when they come up, as always, we try to give everybody the freedom to express their first amendment rights. we only get involved if disruptive or activities or crimes occur. >> in total, 25 people were arrested. they face a variety oa recount in the district 16 congressional race is getting closer to wrapping up. evan low now leads joe simitian by just four votes after tying in the march primary election. but as ktvu lamonica peters tells us, there are still 16 ballots that could swing the final result. >> initial results from the march fifth runoff election for district 16 had both evan low and joe simitian tied for second place, behind sam liccardo, so after the recount, evan low gained 11 votes simitian gained seven. under state law,

three candidates would qualify for the ballot. now, the second place tie could be broken on wednesday after san mateo county reviews 16 ballots in its recount. >> the likelihood of different outcomes has now changed. but really, what has happened overall is that everyone of their vote. >> a recount was requested on april 9th by former sam liccardo staffer jonathan padilla. any voter can request a recount, and santa clara county says , and tr says human error miscalculation by machine operators. melissa michaelson is a political science professor at menlo college. i think this really just opens up a huge pandora's box of folks thinking, well, maybe those election results are wrong and making people question election results and wanting to know more about whose votes were counted and whose votes weren't counted. the

santa clara county registrar of voters says 45 uncounted ballots were challenged. of those 45 ballots,ed or subtracted to theta, and the remaining ballots were not accepted becausere either received too late. the signatures didn't match registration cards, or they lacked citizenship certifications. >> the whole thing is very unusual.mething like this with a three way tie with three people from the same party where it's been, you know, such a. from san mateo county, for certifica. lamonica peters 11 california senator laphonza butler helped introduce a bill today aimed at increasing voter registration among young people. >> the high school voter empowerment act would require states to designatehigh schools as voter registration sites. the bill would also help schools get reimbursed for the cost of becoming a registration site through grants. a group representing more than 800 high

a train slammed right into a bus. >> this story begins tonight's west coast rap, the metro light rail train and a university of southern california shuttle bus collided this afternoon near the usc campus. first responders say at least 55 people had to be treated, including 18 people who had to be taken to the hospital. two victims suffered serious injuries. a spokesperson for la metro says for an unknown reason, the bus crossed into the path of the train. the cause of that crash still under investigation tonight in arizona, an emotional ceremony was held at the make-a-wish american building in phoenix. >> the bronze sculpture of seven year old chris greicius was

the church and she worked for the school. bolter was a cadet in the walnut creek police department and went on to become an officer with pleasant hill police before moving to idaho. >> this past week has been an emotional roller coaster. the loss of deputy bolter has left a gaping hole in our agency and in our hearts. we wanted to have an opportunity to bring the community together here at our church and those who are not able to go up to idaho to be in person, to be able to watch here together in solidarity, to support the family, the vulture family, wells family. >> during the ceremony, the ada county sheriff presented the family with a purple heart. deputy bolter was shot and killed by a driver. he pulled over for a traffic stop. he was 27 years old. >> new at 11. two people have now been charged with child abduction in the case involving mint butterfield, the 16 year-old child of the co-founder of slack, the marin county da,

says christopher defillo and sarah atkins willfully and unlawfully enticed away and concealed butterfield, who was reported missing on april 21st and then found a week later in neighborhood. does a follow in? atkins are scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow morning. >> police in san jose arrested a 53 year old man on suspicion of human trafficking and operating a brothel. >> police say zhiquan liu was the target of the investigation since november. officers received a tip of suspicious activity, possibly linked to human trafficking, at a home on north 16th street and street. liu was arrested on april 19th. they're at the residence where police say officers found cash and two women associated with the operation. >> during the search of the residence, detectives did locate and identify two adult female human trafficking survivors, and they were provided with resources during that time, agents with the fbi helped san jose police with the arrest of

necessary for the development of 168 new affordable homes on south van ness and shotwell street. housing is being built for low income families, formerly homeless families and persons living with hiv, earning between 25 to 80% of the san francisco area median income. >> capitola residents had a chance to provide input as the city looks at new uses for the wharf. major storm damage in january of 2023 forced the demolition of permanent structures on the wharf, including the wharf house restaurant and the boat and bait shop. the city is looking at temporary uses while they finalize more permanent plans. some ideas include food vendors, beer and wine, and live entertainment. several people said the wharf should focus on its traditional uses, as it's a wharf, it's a fishing and boating wharf. >> that's number one. there should not be anything stuck that should never be second to

anything. >> the city says it does. it does intend to lease a portion of the war for bait, tackle and boat rental. there will also be public bathrooms and other amenities. >> we talked about the nice weather we've been having. it's going to continue that way through tomorrow. peaks and temperatures tomorrow low 80s perhaps, and then again thursday upper 70s, low 80s and then friday the clouds come in and things switch around and we get the opportunity for what looks like a rain event on saturday. quarter inch, half inch kind of a thing, maybe more in the coastal hills. we'll see. but these were the highs from today. highs tomorrow are going to be like i say probably that fairfield number will turn into 8081 degrees. santa rosa will be 80 degrees tomorrow. so today's highs will be eclipsed by a few degrees tomorrow. this is the system we're tracking right here. this guy. and it works its way down on saturday morning into saturday afternoon. and that means most likely some wet.

now that's still a few days off, but the models are more and more coming together. they're focusing in on it. all the different the various models. so we'll keep an eye on it. but right now saturday day looks like it's going to be your wet day. sunday looks like the day to, lean into in terms of outdoor activities, but that could change right now. high pressure is there. that's why it's going to be nice tomorrow. that's why the hay fever is nasty. the tree pollens with a windy, breezy conditions. and then that all changes the pollen counts will drop. the winds will actually die down a little bit with this system as well. and we'll get some scattered showers on saturday. that's how it looks right now. and outside we go. that's oakland. beautiful night. the winds that we've had, which have been pretty brisk. we had gusts up to point reyes today at around 30, 35 miles an hour. those winds have kind of cleaned up the atmosphere pretty nicely, which is this time of year is always a fortunate thing for us. the current temperatures are mild to warm, the overnight lows will be mild to just smiled and then the forecast highs tomorrow

bear care group conference this week. this conference looks to improve global conservation for bears. the theme of this year's conference is advancing bear care the next level. it will focus on issues faced by wild bears ending up in human care as a result of human bear conflict. the conference will also discuss how zoos and sanctuaries can support bear welfare by collaborating with fish and wildlife agencies, along with other regulatory agencies. >> also new at 11 uc berkeley's cal falcons need to be named. the university is asking for the public's naming contest will kick off that morning for the four chicks that just hatched last week. >> all right. this year's outside lands festival is offering up package to host theg ceremony or renew their vows. reservations are now open and there are a limited amount of spots available on the
