7:00 am
right now in my mind. and you know, i'm just i'm just heartbroken for the family. a teacher remembers her young student, one of four family members killed in a violent crash in pleasanton. how the community came out to honor the family, and what police now say was likely a factor in the crash. then a new week starts with pro-palestinian protests spreading to another bay area college campus, where students plan to gather later today. a united airlines flight diverted to sfo. why the plane had to turn back and the unusual route the aircraft took from ktvu. fox two news. this is mornings on two. good morning. i'm gasia mikaelian i'm andre senior. today is monday, april 29th. the final days of may in fact. so let's find out how it's going to look on this monday with steve paulson. he is in the weather center this morning tracking the latest. it looks pretty quiet here. can't get rid of that breeze. that's for sure. it'll be a lovely day today. good visibility, good air quality,
7:01 am
but temps will end up pretty close to where they should be for seasonal averages. there's a lot of sun out there. there's only a few patches of low clouds, so if you're looking for sunshine, today is the day and probably tomorrow and maybe a little warmer as we head towards the first and 2nd of may. but you can call me the breeze because that's what we've had. we've had wind, blustery conditions, breezy conditions, but still it'll be nice to mild to warm temperatures in the range where they should be 60s and 70s. well, i'm searching for a smooth commute. is that the case? i think so, steve. i think you're going to be okay in many areas. you know me, i'm a simple man. i like just non-eventful boring traffic. right. and that's happening on 580 as you drive into dublin. however, on 680, which by the way, is open after the weekend closure, we had a crash at 84. that's been slow. 880 at alvarado, alvarado, niles. they've cleared that at the bay bridge toll plaza. we do have a backup that stretches for about 20 minutes. once you get onto the bridge, it looks better. another look at the

south bay when we come back. but now at 701, let's get right back to the headlines, sal. thank you. pro-palestinian demonstrators continue on college campuses nationwide, including at stanford, where organizers say they've made progress in their efforts. ktvu james torres live at stanford with the latest developments there. james garcia. well, all we're really hearing this morning are just the bells, the top of the hour at here at stanford university's campus. behind me, you can see the number of tents that are still here and have been here since thursday, but not too much activity going on. not a lot of noise being made at this hour here. but here's what we're learning from the folks here. these student protesters now saying that they have the support of the student body. we'll show you what the demonstrations on stanford's campus have looked like over the last couple of days. one of the groups represented here, students for justice in palestine, say the school's student body voted overwhelmingly in favor of a ballot initiative calling for israeli divestment. just like at many other campuses across the
7:03 am
country where you see these protests, the people here say schools have investments in companies like lockheed martin, chevron or hewlett packard, and they accuse each of those for contributing to israeli attacks in gaza. one man who approached the protests over the weekend says he hopes all of those demonstrations, at least what we've seen here, continue to remain peaceful. when i look at these kids, i fear for i fear for their safety, and i hope that they will be allowed to exercise their first amendment without the risk of being, kind of retaliated against or being arrested or being harassed or being harmed. this morning, ktvu did reach out to some of the companies mentioned by those protesters. a spokesperson from lockheed martin issued a statement saying in part, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we continue to stand ready to support the u.s. government and allies to deliver strategic deterrence and security solutions. we've yet to hear directly from stanford

university, but we know school administration told students they're in violating, rather in violation of its protest policies, mostly because of those overnight encampments are not allowed. we also know the school asked for those tents to be gone by friday night, or else those people would face consequences in the form of issues with the office of student conduct and even arrests. we have seen law enforcement officers here in the last few days, but no reports of arrests at this time. now it's not clear how much of an influence a student body support or vote would have on the university's board of trustees, who ultimately would make a decision on any divestment conversations. but the people here, those protesters here say having that student body support is still a win. we're live this morning from stanford university . i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news james thank you. a demonstration is also planned on the campus of san francisco state later today. organizers say the noontime rally is meant
7:05 am
to be a show of support for the people of palestine. it is the latest demonstration planned for the bay area, calling for an end to u.s. military aid to israel. they're also calling on the school's president to refrain from calling police to campus to deal with the protesters, as well as refrain from any retaliation against students. and this morning, increased police patrols continue on the ucla campus. following a weekend of tense and sometimes violent protests. he was about to go. several fights broke out on campus yesterday between pro-palestinian demonstrators and pro-israel counter-protesters. the violence came amid a campus demonstration that involved thousands of protesters, many of them ucla students. while at the usc campus, police in riot gear returned this weekend after pro-palestinian demonstrators returned with tents. they reestablished their encampment just days after police arrested 93 demonstrators. last week, usc canceled its main commencement ceremony, citing safety concerns . passengers headed from sacramento to denver finally reached their destination after
7:06 am
quite a roundabout route. the united airlines flight was diverted yesterday morning to sfo due to a possible mechanical issue. flightaware tracked the plane's movements from sacramento to sfo. the planes circled back several times before landing safely at sfo. the boeing jet was carrying 167 passengers. united said its pilots never had to declare an emergency before the flight was diverted. the passengers deplaned and were put on other flights to denver. it has now been a year since a string of stabbings near the uc davis campus. two men were killed. one woman was hurt during a five day period. david bro was the first victim to die in the attacks. he was known in the neighborhood surrounding the uc davis campus as a compassionate man. this weekend, his sister maria paid a visit to the bench on a street corner near the davis campus in his memory. when we hear david's name, i would love for people to think of compassion. that's why he sat here, because he, on this bench specifically, which is a monument to compassion in the

city of davis, and he symbolized that the man who's been arrested for the attacks, 21 year old carlos dominguez, is due back in court in june. that's when he's expected to learn his trial date, the court has ruled. the former uc davis student is mentally competent to stand trial, cleanup and recovery efforts are underway after intense tornadoes slammed parts of the midwest. dozens of destructive tornadoes swept through states like nebraska, kansas and oklahoma this weekend. the strong winds left hundreds of buildings damaged. in oklahoma, at least four people were killed and many more left injured. everything else can be rebuilt, but but we can't. we can't restore life. you come upstairs, and see that you have no house from emerging from the basement. you know, your home, but you're actually homeless as well as that cleanup continues today, the national weather service warns flash flooding remains a threat in parts of the region. 707 now happening today, people can drive in and out of big sur

7:09 am
it's a little crowded, but nothing out of the ordinary. we have been looking. i promised you a look at the south bay. that is a nice commute so far. 880 is slow into union city and southbound 680 is slow because of earlier problems at the sunol grade at 708. let's go back to garcia. people who drive electric vehicles should have an easier time finding a place to charge in california than ever before, governor newsom announced. there are now one ev charging station for every gas station in our state. the governor also highlighted a move by tesla to open up its supercharger network to most other evs, and said it will help in the state's goal of going zero emissions on all vehicles. today, we're announcing tesla's opening up its charging network to additional models of electric vehicles. this is all in an effort to build out the infrastructure in the state of california that currently totals 105,000 electric vehicle chargers for public use, and about 10,000 of these super charging stations. in 2020, governor newsom signed an executive order calling for all

deadly crash. now to an intense push in berkeley to recruit more women to its fire department. this weekend, more than 30 women gathered at the berkeley fire department training center for a firefighter camp, one of many efforts to draw more women to a profession that's long been dominated by men. right now, there are just 18 women serving as berkeley firefighters and emts. the women started the weekend by learning how to properly carry the department's ladders. really neat to be like, can i do this? like, am i able to do this and then see like, oh yeah, i totally can. this is a doable thing. it's achievable if you want to achieve it, this camp is really, really good for that. over the past decade, the number of female firefighters has increased, but they still make up less than 10% of all fire departments. ferry service between san francisco and sausalito remains suspended this monday morning commute. that service stopped back on april 19th, when a routine inspection uncovered some damage to the pier in sausalito, so busses are providing transportation for ferry riders traveling between san francisco and sausalito.

during the closure. the goal is to resume ferry service sometime this week. all right, time now. 716 let's turn things back over to sal castaneda this morning. we're in the middle of the rush hour commute, so what trouble spot should we be looking out for? well, the san mateo bridge. all of a sudden, garcia and andre or andré and garcia, since andre was speaking there first. let's go and take a look at that view of the map system. all of a sudden i see a bunch of slow traffic from 92, eight, 80 heading west. there was a crash southbound 880 right near industrial. so that area a little bit tricky, a little more routine, but still slow nevertheless. this is the bay bridge toll plaza that is backed up a little bit here. 15 to 20 minute delay, no issues on interstate 880. driving past the coliseum. we've had a slight delay at bart because of some police activity at coliseum station. we're going to check in with that. the south bay commute still remains good, although we're seeing some people join us there. but for the most part, i like what i see in that silicon

valley commute at 717, you know, steve, i've been searching for a good commute and i haven't found one yet, so don't ask me no questions. and you won't tell me? no, i won't tell you no lies. that's true. all right. thank you. sir, clarification here. i'm guessing on one of these temps, based on my 2 or 3 years of experience in this business, the bodega bay temp does not report, which is just drives me nuts because it's so important. i need to get that fixed. point raised. boy, temp is 52 point arena 51. so i figured bodega bay is probably close to that 51 look at san francisco bowie 50. that 51 is at the monterey bay aquarium as well. these are really cold bowie temps for the end of april, which means even if we get some warm up inland, fog will not be far away. there's not much today, very little at all. it's been disrupted. air aloft is cool. the wind as well kind of knocks it down, and you can see it disappearing right along the coast. but it'll be

plate readers to track down the people responsible. but according to a city report filed earlier this year, there were 25 home break ins reported from september 2023 to february this year. but that's a 30% drop from the same period the year before. even so, residents feel a sense of unease after hearing about their neighbors homes getting broken into or experiencing that type of crime themselves. at first, she thought the cat had knocked something over. then she heard men's voices and saw lights flashing in the hallway. she yelled. they ran! this has become a very, very sophisticated and organized group of individuals committing these crimes. they definitely know when you're out of town or when they think you should be out of town. santa clara county sheriff's investigators encouraged people at the meeting to make sure their second story doors and windows are locked. they also encourage people to consider things like adding motion detector lights and

surveillance cameras. now, since last year, the town of los altos has set aside hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to supplement their sheriff's patrols with private security patrols. and those patrols do drive around these residential neighborhoods. in the afternoons , a time when law enforcement officers say it is most likely that some of these homes might be broken into. live in los altos ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. ali. thank you. one man remains in custody. this morning accused of attacking piedmont's police chief. the incident unfolded friday afternoon at the ace hardware on grand avenue. police say 42 year old willie gomer randomly struck a customer inside the store. officers responded and while trying to subdue him, used a taser on gomer. they say gomer then ran to a nearby home and investigators say he attacked the police chief, jeremy bowers, who joined other officers outside the home. the chief suffered minor injuries but says the entire incident could have been avoided. why this person

agency says it doesn't have the money to continue with that many and is going back to the original 96. in many of these cases, there may be another guard a block down or nearby that, you know, families could then change their route a little bit and still, you know, feel like they're traveling on a route that has a guard. so we definitely will be working with the safe routes side of the program on that, as well as potentially on kind of re-emphasizing the safety education that they do for second graders and fourth graders at schools where there is a guard that is being, a guard location that's being eliminated. the transportation authority says it will have maps available so families can find the crossing guard closest to their route. if the one they've been using is being eliminated, the jfk promenade in san francisco's golden gate park is celebrating four years of serving as a car free space for people to walk, bike and skate this weekend. hundreds of people turned out to mark the anniversary. mayor london breed officially closed the 1.5 mile

minutes or so, let's call it let's call it 20 minutes. but if you're at the very end of the line, it's going to take you that long to get onto the bridge. 20 ish minutes. let's say if you are driving on the san mateo bridge, it's about this. it's about as crowded as it would be at this time of the morning. things are improving, but it's going to take you a while to cross that span. some of the other commutes are beginning to fill in. silicon valley commute 85 to 8101. we've had a couple of minor things. peninsula these last few days has been impressing me. the peninsula between, let's say, south city and palo alto on 101 and 280. looking good. 737 speaking of looking good, well, who came in? who came in? how do you do it? are not anymore i don't. all right. thank you sir. we do. look at a system that caused all the tornadic activity yesterday. it came out of the rockies. same system we had friday. and you can see. look at that out in advance of that. the key is you get this cold air aloft, comes out of the rockies,

8:03 am
but one initiative on that ballot was to call for the university to divest funds into companies accused of contributing to israeli violence in gaza. they specifically name lockheed martin, chevron and hewlett packard. of the students who voted, they report, about 70% agreed to pass that initiative. one student representative we spoke to earlier this morning, he represents those protesting, he says, because of that support, they don't plan to back down to stanford's threats. they threaten us with officer community standards violations, threaten us with academic discipline actions. but honestly, they're not. it doesn't feel as if they're trying to actually maybe it does feel like they're trying to shut us down, but they're scared to do anything because they know that we're going to fight back because they know we have so much support from the local community, from students on campus, that if they did try anything, it would honestly end poorly for them. so we have reached out to stanford university this morning. still no word from them, but ktvu did
8:04 am
reach out to the company's aimed at the by these protesters. a spokesperson from lockheed martin issuing a statement saying in part, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we continue to stand ready to support the us government and allies to deliver strategic deterrence and security solutions. we know the school administration told these students they're violating its protest policies because of those overnight overnight encampments. those are not allowed. the school also asked these demonstrations, demonstrations to be clear, specifically those tents to be cleared by friday night or else they would face consequences in the form of community standards or student code of conduct violations. i know these students have had some encounters with some police officers, not at all in an intense way, like we've seen in places, other places throughout the country here, but more so officers just keeping an eye on what they are doing here. but those students say nothing has been a problem. so far. we're live this morning from stanford university. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. okay james

the direction that we're going when it comes to public safety. crime is down by 30. public safety a top concern for people who live, work and play in the city of oakland. what the chief of violence prevention there says is working and what still needs to be done to bring peace of mind and safety to oaklanders from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. good morning and welcome back. i'm gasia mikaelian and good morning i'm dave clark. it's monday morning. it's april 29th and steve so far the weather doesn't appear to be too bad. no not at all, mr. clarke. thank you sir. it's a mainly clear out there. there's not much in the way of any low clouds unless you're, well, north or south, and even that is pretty patchy. everything is gone out offshore here, so we'll have lots of sunshine today. but systems in the pacific northwest, just keep that machine of wind rolling right along so you can call me the breeze. that's what we have here because it'll be nice. it'll be sunny. maybe a smidge warmer, but we still get that westerly northwesterly breeze which keeps

temperatures in the 60s and 70s. sal is here 830 on a monday, and the traffic is, well, it's getting better. steve, on a monday. i know a little bit about this because i've seen it over the last, i don't know, month or two, maybe three mondays. the bay bridge toll plaza commute gets better, right before nine. and if you're driving, let's say after nine, it should be a lot better than it was. you can see traffic is still a little bit busy here. now, if you are driving on 880 northbound, you can see that traffic is a little bit busy. no problems on highway 4 or 680 san mateo bridge is moderately heavy. 831 let's get back to the headlines. three law enforcement agencies in the south bay are working to inform and reassure homeowners in one community. following a recent string of home burglaries, santa clara county sheriff's investigators told residents of los altos hills, an organized group of thieves is likely behind a string of break ins. they're adding patrols and using license
8:32 am
plate readers to track them down. officials say. despite the heightened concern, there has actually been a downward trend in the number of residential burglaries, according to a city report, there were 25 home break ins reported from september to february this year, a 30% drop from the same time period the year before. those numbers, though, did little to soothe residents. as always turned on the tv very loud and the lights on inside and outside the house. when we left, none of that mattered. this has become a very, very sophisticated, organized group of individuals committing these crimes. they definitely know when you're out of town or when they think you should be out of town. in santa clara county, sheriff's investigators encouraged people to secure their doors and windows on upper floors and to add motion detector lights and surveillance cameras. since last year, the town of los altos hills has set aside hundreds of thousands of dollars to supplement the sheriff's patrol with private security to patrol neighborhoods in the middle of the afternoon, a time law

enforcement says home burglaries are most likely to happen because thieves assume or observe that most people are away at work. one man remains in custody this morning accused of attacking piedmont's police chief. the incident unfolded on friday afternoon at the ace hardware store on grand avenue. police say 42 year-old willie gomer randomly struck a customer inside the store. officers responded and while trying to subdue him, used a taser on gomer. they say gomer then ran to a nearby home and investigators say he attacked the police chief, jeremy bowers, who joined other officers outside the home. the chief suffered minor injuries. he says the entire incident could and should have been avoided. why this person was even out. he was on parole for kidnaping, robbery and numerous other charges and so clearly he was not in a state where he should be out and about in the public, given his his his level of criminal violent activity. police say the customer who was attacked inside the hardware store was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover. our time is now 833.

over the weekend, our special program in the state of the town took a deep dive into oakland, its issues, its progress and its future. we spoke to doctor holly joshi, the chief of oakland's department of violence prevention, about the strategies to reduce the crime rate, the department of violence prevention. our role is to create a safer oakland by preventing group and gun violence. and so you're absolutely right. we take a public health approach. the ceasefire model that we've re-implemented is a perfect match for the department of violence prevention. as you know, we implemented it very well from 2012 to 2019 and experienced significant reductions in shootings and homicides and crime, and that was largely attributable to the city's successful implementation of a focused deterrence model. so in terms of what is working well, this past four months, since i've taken the chief of department of violence
8:35 am
prevention role, is that we have focused pretty much exclusively on the implementation of a focused deterrence approach, otherwise known as ceasefire and crime is trending down for people who are frustrated or don't feel safe in this community and may not see the work that you all are doing behind the scenes. what is your message to them? from the department of violence prevention and the city broadly, i can say that i'm extremely confident in the direction that we're going when it comes to public safety. crime is down by 30, and we're not going to stop there. we're going to continue to drive violent crime down in the city and holding ourselves and one another accountable to not only the numbers, but also how residents are feeling. that's a really important measurement as well, is, yes, the statistics. and we need to keep our eye on that and we need to be continuously hearing from our community, from our business owners, from our residents about
8:36 am
how oakland is actually feeling. and so that's what we'll be focused on this year. and the years to come. the narrative will follow our results. and again, we're trending in the right direction. we're we're not going to stop. we're going to continue with our foot on the gas to reduce crime in the city. now you can see our entire program, the state of the town on the fox local app at any time . time now is 836. california is honoring its arab american residents. this weekend, the governor issued a proclamation declaring april as arab american heritage month. california is home to the largest arab american population in the country, with thriving communities in the bay area, los angeles san diego governor newsom said the state is proud and grateful for the immeasurable contributions arab americans have made to our state. our time is now. 836 a proposal to allow non-citizens to vote in board elections at the city college of san francisco just cleared a major hurdle, supporters of the proposal say if it passed, it

would give their foreign born students a stronger voice on campus. while critics say the proposal would not solve the school's problems, the college's board of trustees unanimously approved that proposal. now it's in the hands of the city's board of supervisors for a final say on this matter. well, doctors, hospitals and health insurance companies in california will be limited to annual price increases of just 3% beginning in 2029. that's under a new rule that state regulators approved. it's the latest attempt to bring down the soaring costs of medical care. recent studies have shown the money that californians spend on health care every year has climbed more than 5% a year over the past 20 years. after four years of debate, the state's highest court upheld a half cent alameda county sales tax measure that funds child care and pediatric services for low income families. measure c passed back in 2020 with 64% of the vote, was then challenged by the

county's taxpayers association, which said it required a two thirds approval. california supreme court ruled that tax is a citizen led effort and only needed a simple majority. the 20 year half cent sales tax is expected to generate about $150 million a year. the tax is already being collected and has been sitting in escrow. one of the largest children's service providers in the bay area is getting millions in federal funding. wu yi children's services will receive nearly $10 million from the department of health and human services. wu yi. san francisco's biggest head start provider. the goal is to make the program available to more children so they'll reach kindergarten ready to learn and succeed. our time is 838. one state political leader is supporting san francisco mayor's legislation that would waive the fees for certain events. on friday, mayor london breed introduced two new bills. one would waive city fees for outdoor community events, making them less expensive for organizers. the other would simplify health permits for food vendors. at some of those events

. all right. let's talk about this changing weather. 838 steve, one would like to think we could plan that, say, a birthday party in early may and not need those canopies, but that might not be the case. i may not be the case right now. it does look windy and cooler. maybe some rain, maybe, depending on which forecast model verifies here would not surprise me though. the weekend was one of wind and over the weekend we had some pretty good gusts here that were rocking and rolling. had gusts 40mph plus for a few here. maybe you were one of those. ocean beach 47, oakland airport 46. sfo is 44. hayward was 40. i know around vallejo. american canyon was 38 to 40. petaluma napa, redwood city, san jose all in their 30 plus. still a decent breeze out of the northwest mountain, middle peak was on the north side of mount tamalpais. was up to 39 earlier. has come down a little bit, but almost everyone in with a west or a northwest breeze and that will continue. santa rosa gusting 26 novato, 17 napa airport, northwest fairfield and also concord with

a westerly breeze. san francisco's high temp has been cool and held down by that breeze as well. coming in off the ocean there 60, 60, 62, 62 on the highs. the last four days. i went 63 today and that might be a soft 63, if you will. the buoy temps are incredibly cold. san francisco buoy is 50 degrees point reyes point arena at 52, and the monterey bay aquarium buoy is a brisk 51. so really nothing left to support the low clouds and fog. but if we get a little bit of a bump up in those inland temps, i guarantee it'll be back fast. we're caught in between systems, one in the middle of the country, but these other systems just keep moving in in the pacific northwest, keeping a really active pattern for them that keeps the wind going. for us. these systems are north, but it ushers in that breezy pattern, mainly 50s on the temps here, there's just not a lot of change here going forward. the bigger change might be towards friday and then into the weekend. we'll see a lot of the couple of the forecast models keep the low up in oregon. the other two drop it right into northern california, which would
8:41 am
