Author: Abu Hafs 'Umar b. 'Abbas al-Qafs!

Date: as above

These two compositions, the Talchmis in blade ink, the
Tashtir in green, are combined with the Burda text (in red) in
two columns to form a hind of "Burda mosaic". It is not certain
exactly how the final arrangement was meant to be read. It is
absolutely regular, three stichs in black, followed by one in
red and one in green (or vjice versa). When the copyist by mis-
take used the wrong colour, he drew a line above the stich in

21

the correct colour. It is easy to read any one of tlie three
compositions by itself, and both the TaMunis and Tasht3x are
located according to the jtir da text.

!Phe author of the Burda is named Muhaamad b. Sa'Id b. Hammad

MS 148 (Commercial letters)

AN ALBUM OF PRESSED FLOWERS, WITH ARABIC COMMER-
CIAL LETTERS ON TRACING -PAPER SERVING TO PROTECT

THE FLOWERS

There is no direct connection "between the flowers
(mainly European) and the lafcters, but the flov/ers were probably
gathered in or near the places mentioned in the letters. The
letters are all statements of business transactions and are of
interest because they belong to a psriod when Near Eastern commer-
cial enterprises in Europe were beginning to assume the modern
character. Letters dated variously in the 1860's and 1870' s.

Leaves 24, 11& x 9- in,, held by white tape to spine. The flowers
are mostly held to the leaves by .white paper strips, but some are
loose. Letters difficult to read. in places because of absorbent
nature of tracing paper. Bound within thick, black European
boards, black leather and gilt lines on spine, no flap.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Professor James Robson was kind enough to point

out typographical and other errors in the first

two fascicles, and it was possible to make the

/
neoessary ohangea in most copies before they

were sent out»

It is a real pleasure for the Cataloguer to

acknowledge his kindness further, for he has

looked through the draft of these notes before

they were mimeographed, but he did not have access

to the Manuscripts. Grateful thanks are accorded

to him for all his help and generous advice.
