MSS 52-56 represent Vols.III-V, VIII, XI of the complete
work, which was transcribed from the MS Tasauwuf no.114
(Zaiyat,IQiaza':baii'l..Kutuh, p. 58) in the Public Library, Dam-
ascus. The Vol. mutters relate only to the- transcription.
This was done for A.G.Ellis, the original owner, and he has
appended the correspondence relating to the transaction, dating
from 1909 at the end of Vol. III. All the Vols, are dated 1328
or^l329 f ^except the first (Vol. Ill) wh itih is erroneously dated
1313. Sadiq' s photograph is appended in folio 666. Judging
from statements in later volumes (see below) he was the chief
copyist and delegated the tas2c of copying some of the volumes
to others; he determined the format.

parts into which the work is divided appear in folio 2. The
work, correctly identified by a previous cataloguer, is "Libro
de la Vanidad del Mundo. :i The translation was done for Yusuf
Saifl (see on MS 58 above). There are 100 sections dealing with
various homiletic thenes on vanities. The previous cataloguer
refers this work to a printed copy in the British Museum (14501.
e.4).
Folios 283, 8 x 5-s-iii; in single columns of average 21 lines to
page, no border. 7/ritten on vertically -laid paper, with horiz-
ontal layer to the inch, in clear Naskh, unvocalized, with few
orthographic signs. Paragraphs separated by snail, wheel-like
designs in red. Extensive marginal references to biblical
verses quoted. Chapter headings in red. Bound in thick, dark

brown leather, badly deteriorated on spine, no flap. Simple
•Unwan in folio 1 states that this is Part I of the work. Folios
3-5a give a fully detailed Pihrist, which is followed by an
ornamented Cross with inscription, and at the bottom a quotation
from Galatians ii. Folio 283 contains a pietist ic statement
about the dead in a different hand.
There are several sheets here and there throughout which are
modern (thick white paper of sane design, but of modern manufac-
ture); seemingly these fill lacunae in the copy consulted.
Shis is typical of works in Yusuf Saifl's library. Saifl took
considerable pains to ensure the completeness of his 'volumes.

the Kaf iya. it is clearly a commentary on an earlier Grammar.
The text is introduced by the letter Sad in red and is overlined
in red, while the commentary is introduced by the letter Shin
(for Sharh) in red. The work may well be complete. It ranges
comprehensively over every important grammatical topic.

The Commentator states that he is commenting on the
Dlwan of 'Uciar b. cl-F.arid and referring to other commentaries
on the same. He mentions only the Sharh of Ja&aladdln as-
Suyutl, adding that he himself does not deal with Part II of
the Dlwan. Thei*s are quotations from al-Mutanabhl. The author
appears to have "been a pupil of 'Umar, or perhaps his nephew

by red dots. Quotations in red, a few annotations. Bound in
reddish-brown leather, no flap, with green-marbled paper on
both covers. Simple 'Unwan in later hand at top of folio 1.
Many margins repaired. Worm-eaten throughout, but generally in
good condition. Four blank sheets of poor matt quality at
either end. First page text obscured by repairs to margin.
Last folio contains 21 lines of text, but all except 3£ are
scored through, as if to moke a new ending in view of the true
ending being missing.
