No Unwan. Folio la has a highly ornamented, multicoloured
design i?-ith inset "bi'smillah".
See MS 29 above, which is probably a digest or
. extract of this work.
This medical MS is very like »M U jizu 'l-Qanun-, published
" Calcutta, 1828. According to an English note on the
inside of the front cover there is the same arrangement;
both end with the story of the mad dog whose liver, when
eaten, acts as a therapeutic. This MS is twice as long as
49
the printed "book, but it is difficult to say with certainty
whether this copy is expanded or is a Sharh. The work
begins with the four humours, gives general rules, drugs
and dietetic treatment. There is a long section on ail-
ments confined to particular parts of the body.

THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
Department of Semitic Languages & Literatures
CATALOGUE
of
ORIENTAL MANUSCRIPTS
by
John Macdonald
6. ARABIC MSS I -SO
J
Preface
The Oriental Manuscripts described in the fascicles of
this Catalogue are the property of the University of Leeds,
Departnient of Semitic languages and Literatures, They were
purchased for the University by the Head of the Department,
the Itev. John Bowman, M.A., B.D., D.Phil., who spent much
time and care in selecting from various sources what seerae-d
to him valuable by reason of antiquity, condition and, primar-
ily, subject. As a result of his labours he succeeded in acqu-
iring MSS representing a wide range of topics, so that the col
lection covers the whole field of Islamio and Arabic studies.
The first Index herein is Indicative of that wide range, and
the obvious value of many of the MSS and their uniqoiess as
a collection duly illustrate his discretionary powers.
The collection at present comprises about 400 MSS, the
majority of thera Arabic, the remainder Persian, Turkish.
Samaritan and Syriac.
The Department intend that research be undertaken into
these MSS and already several post-graduate students, promis-
ing Arabists, have begun such work. The Department's staff
are willing to offer every facility and guidance to any who
desire to work on the MSS for higher degrees at the University
of Leeds.
My thanks are gladly given to the following colleagues
and others*- to Dr.Bowman for providing the materials and
helping to identify carelessly written words in the MSSj to
Professors J. de Somogyi, Ph.D., D.Sc, and A.Guillaume, M.A.,
ii
D.D. (the latter on the staff of the Department at the
time of cataloguing) for identifying a few of the works>
to Mr. Samir Hissamy, B.Sc, for helping to unravel some
texts, and to Miss Ann Alldrit, B.A. for typing and proof
reading. Finally, to my own teacher, Professor James Itobson,
M.A., B.D., D.Litt., D.D., my indebtedness, for.it was his
catalogue format that inspired the one used herein.

The works were oatalogued in "brief as they came into
the possession of the Department and there is no special
order of subject, author or title When the several fasq-
ioles, each containing a description of 50 MSS, have been
completed (including in every case an Index of suhj3ct
author and title), a Classified Catalogue will be produced
in tho form of a comprehensive Index.
Titles, names of authors, dates, beginnings -raid ends
of MSS are given as found. Hate rial within brackets is
usually provided from other sources to prevent possible
confusion in identifying.
Inferences to Brockelmann's "(JAL" are given thus, e.g.:
G. 1.400 (^eschichte Band I, page 4-00) and, for the Supplsm-.
ont, S. 1.400. Small sections are set fee low the line,
inferences to Brockolniann arc to tho page numbers (unless
otherwise stated), as tho present writer shares the view
of many that it is unsatisfactory to have, as in -GAL"
ltsa.lf , two systems of references. Where a "GAL" roferonco
is within brackets it is given for interest only and may
have no immediate bearing on tho work described.
With regard to :, Bogins i: and "Ends", the former is
supplied normally from the text after 'ba'dahu 1 or 'arna
ba'd', and the latter from the final text before the Colo-
phon and/or Ascription or Dedication, In some works, how-
ever, it is impossible to separate either Ascription from
V
the text, in which, case the beginning and end of the actual
script are quoted. This practice is intended to obviate
the difficulty often experienced in cross-referencing with
other copies, occasioned by a copyist having added to,
omitted or altered an Ascription.
Size of folios is given to the nearest ■*• inch. The
great majority of the MSS are not paginated.
Many of the MSS possess no 'UnwSn. In this case the
work may or may not reveal the necessary details of title,
author or date of copying. In some works a former owner
has succeeded in identifying or having identified the MS
in his possession, usually (but not always) correctly.
Otherwise the cataloguer has been responsible for identi-
fication; where he has boen uncertain a question mark has
been employed.
It is hoped that scholars consulting this Catalogue
will kindly inform the cataloguer of any mistakes they may
discover, or of additional information - which will be
gladly acknowledged.
