armed suspect. good evening. i'm greg lee, and i'm crystal bailey. >> we've been monitoring the standoff situation for the last two hours. this is a live look from above. you can see two armored vehicles surrounding a suspect's car, and the car's back windshield has holes in it. but it is unclear right now if those are bullet holes. >> chp tells us this stemmed from a reported shooting on highway 101 in santa rosa this morning. officers tracked that suspect vehicle through a shopping center in rohnert park, which led to a pursuit about 330. that suspect vehicle stopped here near the 8680 interchange in fairfield. right now, we want to bring in officer andrew berkeley, public information officer with the chp officer berkeley. appreciate the time. let me start with the strategy here. as we have been watching this unfold, we see that car boxed in. what can you tell us about what's happening now? >> yeah. so what you're seeing is the solano county sheriff's office and the fairfield police department are utilizing their armored vehicles. as you mentioned, this vehicle and the
6:01 pm
suspect are out of a shooting incident that occurred in santa rosa today, we do at this point believe that the suspect is still armed. and just to be clear, the holes that you see in the back windshield are are not bullet holes. they are less lethal, so the swat teams are going through options that they have right now to try to get the individual to, to surrender his weapon and ultimately surrender. >> so, officer, you're talking about those not being bullet holes and him, this person being still armed. is it still a dangerous situation for folks out there as they travel past that area? >> absolutely. and as you mentioned, we have both directions of interstate 80 shut down right now. and that is the reason why, again, once we were able to determine that he is still armed, our biggest concern is the safety of everyone else nearby. and so while we understand this is frustrating to everyone trying to get home on a friday evening, our biggest concern is, is the safety of
6:02 pm
everyone who may just be driving by. >> yeah. officer berkeley, we know this pursuit as we look at this traffic map, as you referenced, just how backed up 80 is right now, when we go back to that pursuit, we know that he has a flat tire. is that what you believe led him to stop at this 8680 interchange, which has led to this standoff? >> yes, it appears so. at one point during the pursuit, it appears that, one of the agencies involved, at some point along the way, was able to successfully deploy a spike strip, which ended up flattening 1 or 2 of the tires. so it appears that eventually he understood he wasn't able to go any further and just chose to stop where he is now. >> officer berkeley has has there been any gunfire exchanged between him and your officers out there? >> no. at this time there has not. as i mentioned, the holes that are in the rear window are actually from less lethal projectiles. so the swat teams did utilize, gas. they did
6:03 pm
utilize some less lethal options to try to get him to surrender. but so far those have proven to not be successful. >> officer berkeley, we're seeing throughout this standoff you've utilized that drone to maybe get a picture of the suspect inside. when you go back to some of those less than lethal. is that tear gas? and we see another canister look like it's being deployed here. what are they using exactly here? >> so i'm not on scene with them right now. i can say that, you know, these teams are very well trained. they have a lot of different options that they can use, we know that there are things that, you know, we want to work through. our goal is to get this individual out of the vehicle and in custody without being injured, without our officers or anyone else being injured. so we need to work through these steps. and again, we understand people are are frustrated in this backup. but our our number one goal is safety. >> okay. thank you, officer berkeley for your time there. we're continuing to monitor the situation obviously causing a lot of backup on the freeway
6:04 pm
there as people continue to try to get home. do you know how long this might go on, you know, again, we are working as quickly as possible to resolve this, but we can never sacrifice safety for the sake of speed. so our our priority is getting this resolved as quickly as possible and having, you know, everyone stay safe at the same time. >> all right. officer berkeley, chp, public information officer updating us on the standoff at the 8680 interchange in fairfield, where we can see that suspect vehicle boxed in swat officers as well as chp working on coming up with a resolution to this situation as they fire less than lethal, as well as other mitigants like gas into that car. we will continue to stay updated. officer berkeley, thanks so much for your time. thank you. >> and now to san jose, where two officers were shot and wounded. >> today, police say the officers were protecting a mother and her three children from a domestic violence suspect , who then started shooting at officers. >> as ktvu jesse gary tells us, the shootout unfolded at a hotel
6:05 pm
where the family was hiding. >> this is the classic reason why police work is so dangerous. it's the unknown. you could go to this call a thousand times and nothing ever goes wrong. and the thousand and first time is this one. >> san jose acting police chief paul joseph says two patrol officers lucky to be alive after confronting armed felon kevin briones around 1030 thursday night. a front desk receptionist at the extended stay hotel on san ignacio avenue near bernal road called 911, saying someone in a third floor room needed help. >> a mother and children were sheltering on the other side of a thin motel door from a known man who had recently committed violence on them. >> two arriving officers confronted briones in a hallway. investigators say the 33 year old felon, who was wanted on two warrants, reached into a duffel bag, pulled a stolen nine millimeter handgun and opened fire. the two officers returned fire, rattling hotel guests. >> they came banging on the door very shortly after, saying that
6:06 pm
we had to shelter in place. they let us know that there was officers down. i'm shaking. i'm scared. >> the officers on the force one year and two and a half years were both injured, with the junior officer being critically wounded. >> the second officer immediately pulled the more seriously injured officer to safety and immediately began assessing him for injuries. went to apply a tourniquet before he even realized that he himself had been shot. >> briones jumped through a third story plate glass window onto the ground below and tried to escape. >> i didn't think anything like this would happen, but you never know. you never know. you know, things are crazy now. >> backup officers found him a short distance away and arrested him. >> thanks to the swift and courageous action of our officers, no one else was harmed. and there's no ongoing threat. >> one officer was treated for moderate injuries at a nearby hospital and released. the other remains in critical condition. but chief joseph says the prognosis from surgeons is promising.
6:07 pm
>> are these life threatening injuries? and she said they are. but he'll survive. >> briones is also in critical condition after being hit at least once in the exchange of gunfire. officials say this case points to a convergence of criminal justice factors that must be addressed. >> illegally possessed guns continue to proliferate our streets and place our community and officers in danger, the chief says. >> over the past 15 months, 12 san jose police officers have been targeted by gunfire. five officers have been hit. briones remains in the hospital and won't make a court appearance until he's discharged. the mother and her three children, ages eight, ten and 15, are okay , at least physically outside san jose police headquarters. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. >> we have more details now about a deadly crash in the east bay that killed a family of four, including two children, the alameda county coroner has now positively identified the fourth victim in the crash. 41 year old quincy george was with her husband, tyrone george, in their nine and 13 year old sons in the crash. they lived in

6:09 pm
to give himself the best chance of getting away. >> the holdup happened exactly two months after another carrier was robbed while on her rounds, just blocks away. also on euclid avenue near grand avenue. you can hear her screaming off camera while the robbers don't appear to be the same man, norfleet says it's too early to say if the same crew is responsible. this part of adams point includes several mail routes, so there's plenty of postal trucks driving around. >> they steal their keys. they are not the master keys, and that's how they do it. >> neighbors like daniel dillard says postal workers are especially vulnerable while on the street, targeted by robbers who want to steal mail. later >> then it's like kind of sad because the other person is just the mailman or the mail delivery is just like doing their job. we spotted this carrier on her rounds on adams street, but she realized her truck was too hot and couldn't run. >> a supervisor had to be called. they had to transfer bins of mail and packages to another truck. residents say they're unnerved by the holdups. >> surprising to us, we didn't
