jose police officers in a gun battle with a suspect. the shootout at an extended stay hotel along san ignacio avenue in south san jose left a suspect and one of the officers in the hospital, both with life threatening injuries. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary at the scene with an update. jesse on what's happening there. >> gasia good afternoon to you. san jose police are going to hold a media briefing coming up in the next hour to provide more details as to what led up to this shooting here in south san jose. the streets around the extended stay motel remain closed at this hour, which is impacting traffic. this, as investigators continue processing the scene, a scene that saw two police officers and one suspect all shot. the san jose police say a disturbance call brought officers here thursday night to the motel on san ignacio and bernal. that was around 1030 in the evening, according to police. arriving officers saw what they describe as a, quote male suspect investigate. they say that suspect opened fire on two

officers, who then returned fire. >> they came banging on the door very shortly after saying that we had to shelter in place because, well, at first they didn't tell us what happened. then when they came back about two hours later, they let us know that there was officers down. >> the two officers and the suspect all hit. one officer and the suspect are at a nearby hospital in critical condition. the second officer suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital. some of the guests who are staying at this hotel say police officers have been called here a few times over the past few days. >> these little incidents that happen all the time, you know, i didn't think anything like this would happen, but you never know. you never know. you know, things are crazy now. >> police have not said what crimes the suspect was wanted for or the nature of the disturbance that initially brought officers here. as i said earlier, news conference top of the next hour where command staff will provide more

information into the exchange of gunfire. that's left three people shot, two officers and one suspect will be there. we'll have that for you online ktvu.com. and of course, updates for you for five and six this evening. we're live in south san jose this afternoon, jesse gary ktvu, fox two news. garcia, back up to you in oakland jesse. >> thank you. oakland police gathered to honor the lives of two fallen officers at the alameda county memorial wall. the names of officers twan ley and jordan wingate were added to the memorial in pleasanton. the wall honors law enforcement and firefighters who died in the line of duty in alameda county. officer ley was shot and killed in december while responding to a break in at a cannabis store. officer wingate died april 20th. he'd been on life support following a crash in 2018 involving his patrol vehicle. police in concord say they've arrested the owner of a hair salon on charges of sexual

assault. the police department says chief, who was arrested earlier this week accused of sexual assault of a minor the police say happened inside the hair salon. police say there is reason to believe there may be other victims. they're asking anyone with more information to contact law enforcement. for the first time, children brought into the united states by undocumented immigrants will be allowed to apply for affordable health care. the biden administration made the announcement this morning. ktvu james torres explains the new rule and how it will affect people here in california. >> when i came in 2005 at the age of five years old, yesenia solis found out this morning she will now be qualified to shop for health insurance, something she's never had living in the u.s, meaning any visit to the doctor cost a lot. a lot of, home remedies, a lot of trying to hope, you know, drinking teas and whatnot. so things never had to go to the case of having to go to the doctor. >> that's because she's a daca

recipient, meaning she was brought into the country as a child by undocumented immigrants . hundreds of thousands of daca recipients across the country don't have health insurance. if their jobs don't offer it, they can't get in on government sponsored programs. that's going to change. >> this is going to benefit up to 100,000 people. zach cohn is an immigration attorney in washington, dc, a job he's passionate about. my father was a colombian immigrant, a new rule by the biden administration will let people like jessenia get access to health care. >> for the first time ever, those daca recipients can shop and buy a health plan through the affordable care act. in our state, we call that covered california. >> and these are also people who don't have criminal history and have, committed themselves to education and at minimum, a high school diploma and have been in the united states since they were 2007, since 2007, and since

they've been children. >> today, yesenia is a community organizer and a graduate from uc berkeley, currently working on her master's at sac state. she says this opportunity is a long time coming and hopes it's only one step toward expanding daca recipients rights. >> this is not to say that this isn't, valuable because it definitely is impactful and it gives a lot of resources, especially for taking care of our physical health. but i think we deserve this and we deserve so much more. >> this new change goes into effect in november, when open enrollment for the next year begins. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> the rule does not allow daca recipients to apply for medicaid . however, a decision from governor newsom earlier in the year expanded medi-cal to all undocumented immigrants in our state. new at noon, several bay area companies planning to cut hundreds of jobs in the next two months, most of them in the tech industry, according to official notices filed with the state employment development department. intel, amazon,

kaiser and electric vehicle charging firm free wire technologies have all disclosed intentions to conduct layoffs. intel will eliminate 75 jobs this month in san jose. in june, amazon is laying off 85 workers in san francisco. free wire technologies is cutting 113 jobs in newark. kaiser is eliminating 33 positions in pleasanton and 11 in downtown oakland. in a statement released this morning by intel about its laid off workers, the company said no employees will have the right to bump or displace other employees , and there is no union representing the affected employees. college students hoping to intern at tesla may lose out due to cost cutting measures at that company. a group of students posted on social media this week that tesla notified them they no longer had internships for the summer. some students are complaining they received little advance notice and had already booked housing for the program. students are blaming the electric car company's recent economic issues, which include eliminating 10% of its 140,000 employee workforce. new at noon san jose is building on its efforts to revitalize business

in its downtown district. mayor matt mehan, council member omar torres and small business owners this morning cut the ribbon for the city's storefront activation program. just over a year ago, there were nearly 80 vacant storefronts in the downtown area. there are now just under 70. with today's opening of five pop up shops at moment paseo on paseo de san antonio, mayor mehan says the program will help the small businesses with their initial overhead costs. >> the idea is to support them at the beginning of their journey, reduce barriers to entry as much as possible so that they can test their ideas and learn and adapt and get to self-sufficiency and become totally self-sustaining and growing businesses, creating jobs and unique products and services for our community. >> moment paseo is planning to extend to 11 businesses operating out of four storefronts. well, rain is in the forecast. you haven't changed your saturday plans. maybe roberta gonzalez can convince you to do that now. >> well, but my gift to you,

debris on campus after the pro-palestinian encampment was demolished, more than 200 people were arrested after a tense standoff between police and protesters, many of them now facing charges of unlawful assembly that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine. a southern california lawmakers requesting a formal investigation into possible civil rights violations at ucla during this week's demonstrations in los angeles, assembly member rick chavez, zbur, sent a letter to the u.s. department of education that outlines his concerns on how ucla responded to protests and counter demonstrations on campus this week, letter says, in part on all counts, ucla has failed to uphold its most important responsibility, which is to protect the safety, well-being and civil rights of all of its students, freedom of speech and freedom to peacefully protest are fundamental pillars of our democracy. but violence, harassment and intimidation are not speech and have no place on campus or anywhere. students at usc are being invited to a

graduation party next week after the university canceled its main commencement ceremony. the cancellation came in response to protests and the controversy when the university told its valedictorian she would not be allowed to give a traditional speech. yesterday, usc said it would instead hold a trojan family graduate celebration at the coliseum featuring drone shows, fireworks and live entertainment, including the usc marching band. administrators at stanford university have sent a photo to the fbi of someone wearing a headband that's normally worn by hamas fighters, university spokesperson says. the person was seen earlier this week near the encampment at white plaza on the stanford campus. investigators say the person wore a green headband, a face covering and glasses. the person has not been identified, and so far the fbi has made no comment. a wave of campus activism in support of gaza is not only dividing students and staff, but also creating divisions within political parties. lawmakers in washington are all over the spectrum on how the protests should be handled. we'll get more now from rebecca castor, the nypd are out in

force friday morning, arresting dozens of protesters at two new york schools. >> there is some organization behind this movement. there is somebody funding this. there is somebody radicalizing our students. >> and most lawmakers in washington want to shut it down. >> these people are saying that they're trying to liberate palestine, but they're yelling heil hitler and that's completely inappropriate. these anti-semitic protest sites have got to stop. >> earlier this week, the house passed a bipartisan bill that would pave the way for universities that allow anti-semitic speech to lose federal funding. but some republicans and democrats take issue with the broad definition of anti-semitism used in the bill and say it infringes on free speech and fair criticism of israel. >> there are things that are being called anti-semitic, that are not anti-semitic. we also need to educate ourselves about that. >> this also targets christians. and, you know, says that christians could be labeled as anti-semitic. >> that bill is now in the hands of the senate, but so far, it's the only action taken by

washington since the college protests erupted. president biden has condemned the violence, but his department of justice hasn't announced any civil rights investigations into these universities, even as many jewish students say they feel unsafe on campus. >> i got spit at, yelled at. they were trying to take my picture. they're definitely trying to intimidate us, get us to leave. but what we really need, though, is moral clarity and leadership on campus and out of the white house. >> we have laws on the books that just need to be enforced. >> so far, the university of southern california is the only university to cancel its main commencement ceremony because of the protests. but others say they're increasing security and safety measures to prevent disruptions in washington. rebecca kaster ktvu, fox two news arizona governor katie hobbs has signed a bill to repeal the state's near-total ban on abortions. >> hey. reproductive rights activists gathered around the governor as she signed a bill to

repeal the ban. however, the new repeal won't take effect until october. this means the near-total ban that dates back to 1864 will be the law in arizona for a few more months. >> we should not rest, but we should recommit to protecting women's bodily autonomy and their ability to make their own health care decisions and the ability to control their lives. >> arizona's attorney general and planned parenthood are looking into ways to allow abortion services during the limited time the near-total ban will be law. once the repeal takes effect, arizona will still ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. well tsa agents got quite a surprise when they found two snakes stuffed in a bag inside a passenger's pants. this happened in miami last week. tsa agents say the passenger had two small snakes inside a camouflaged bag inside their pants. customs and border protection were called in for help. still don't know if those snakes were pets or if the person was trying to smuggle them through the airport. tsa did not say if the unidentified passenger was arrested about an hour from now, 19 people will

residence at stanford. he's a civil rights activist who helped write the reverend martin luther king jr. s i have a dream speech . also, former stanford swimmer katie ledecky, she's the most decorated female swimmer in history so far, winning seven olympic gold medals and 21 world championship gold medals. pelosi issued a statement on the medal, saying freedom was the vision of our founders has been the goal of our men and women in uniform and is our promise to our children. it is with reverence for freedom and respect for all who have received it that i am deeply honored and forever grateful. two national monuments here in california are expanding . president biden signed a proclamation expanding the berryessa, snow mountain and san gabriel mountains national monuments. berryessa snow mountain national monument stretches over seven counties, including napa. the expansion will add more than 13,000 acres of public land to the monument's original 330,000 acres, land that's considered significant to tribal nations. >> this is testament to the biden administration's commitment to open space, providing protection for this

following a shootout when officer's injuries are described as life threatening. the officers were investigating a disturbance last night at the extended stay hotel in south san jose. investigators say the officers located a suspect on the third floor, and that the man opened fire. the suspect was also shot. his wounds are considered life threatening as well. san jose mayor matt mehan spoke about the shooting this morning. >> two families got the call. they always dreaded and prayed would never come, and we got a reminder of the courage that it takes to put on the badge and protect our city every day.

are reported might be a little different. >> jelani and his mothers view many neighbors have just given up reporting everyday crime. >> it really hurts because we love oakland. we love being here . but something has to happen, you know, because it's getting out of control. >> her message to city leaders we've got to see more police presence. >> we've got to see more community engagement with the police. we've got to see these criminals get off the streets. >> and it turns out this is not even the first time they've had a family car stolen. they say it has happened three times before. so they say frankly, they are not expecting to get their daughter's car back in oakland, zac sos, ktvu fox two news oakland fire officials say they're now investigating a restaurant fire last november as a case of arson. >> horn barbecue reopened last week after fire shut it down for half a year. the building was deemed unsafe to use due to fire damage, authorities say evidence at the scene revealed someone may have set the fire intentionally. the owner says the restaurant was defaced and

vandalized the day before it burned. now to hawaii, where maui county is filing a lawsuit against major cell carriers over the deadly wildfires there last august. the county is suing verizon and t-mobile spectrum, and at&t says the companies failed to properly inform police of widespread service outages during the incident. the county says if it had known it would have used other methods to get an evacuation effort out to people on lahaina, 101 people died in the fires. firefighters in san leandro are investigating a house fire that happened on 167th avenue and los banos drive last night around 10:00 at a two story home. this video from citizen app shows flames and clouds of thick, gray smoke at the scene. alameda county firefighters say they had the flames out in about 20 minutes. no one was hurt. two people inside were able to get out safely. across the bay, a local firefighter is battling brain cancer is now advocating for his colleagues. san francisco fire battalion chief matt alba is a member of the san francisco firefighters cancer prevention foundation. after being on the front lines of various

california wildfires, including the camp fire up in paradise that was diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer, he's been receiving treatment for a couple of years, gets mri scans twice a year. he's trying to save others from a similar fate and advocating for fellow firefighters who are known to be exposed to toxic chemicals on a daily basis. >> there's a lot that we can do as a society to make this better, because fires are always going to happen, emergencies are always going to happen, accidents are always going to happen, and we'll need firefighters to step up. >> the firefighters cancer prevention foundation is funding a study of 50 active duty firefighters to observe how their dna changes based on exposure to toxic chemicals. some of those firefighters are being given sulforaphane shots, which studies have shown help lower carcinogens. one company that sells sulforaphane shots is partnering up with the foundation for the study and is providing the product free to

pace for its best stock market day since 2022. the tech giant reported today better than expected earnings for the second quarter. apple also announced the largest ever stock buyback program. shares are up about 7% right now. apple plans to buy back $110 billion of its shares. these developments come after the company reported overall sales dropped 4, while iphone sales went down 10% in year to year numbers. economists are still optimistic about apple. bank of america analysts call apple a top pick. job growth wage increases cooled last month, calming concerns the economy may be overheating and reviving. hopes the fed could lower interest rates this fall. edward lawrence has more from washington, d.c. cream biscuits and u.s. job growth slowed sharply in april, while the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose, a sign that high interest rates and inflation are starting to weigh on the labor market. >> the economy added 175,000 new jobs last month, fewer than

march and a five month low. the unemployment rate rose to 3.9. >> that job gain number is actually higher than the average in 2019. this is a solid report, and it's exactly, i think, what wall street and the fed want to see that inflation is coming down. the labor market is not the main source of inflation. >> some of the losses were in administration and support services losing 22,700 jobs. now within that temporary help services lost 16,400 jobs. manufacturing has added 8000 jobs, but over the past three months, manufacturing lost 5000 jobs. meanwhile, the number of people working or looking for work remained about the same. while the wage growth was more subdued, with average hourly earnings rising less than expected. month over month wages increased 0.2. >> the most important number in this report was the lousy wage gain numbers. now i know wall street might like low wages, but you know what? workers like high wages. >> we always want to see workers getting more money in their pockets, right? workers having

california's proposition 47, which lowered penalties for petty thefts and minor drug offenses. some say there are more effective solutions than removing the law or imposing harsher penalties for repeat offenders. ken oliver is the vice president of corporate social responsibility at checker. we talked with him on the night, he said. stable employment has been shown as one way to help reduce the likelihood of someone re-offending. >> what's causing this is poverty and lack of access. so when people lost jobs coming out of the pandemic, primarily in the service sector, primarily in the hospitality sector, in the food sector, the people who are underserved, the people who live in east oakland and the tenderloin district and other communities are the ones that lost their jobs because there wasn't access. there wasn't people going into those businesses. what we're saying is giving people access and providing pathways to livable wage jobs in places like the bay area or los angeles county is the true answer, dr. oliver says. >> california spends about $130,000 a year to send a person to prison, and says that money would be better spent investing in education and job training programs. as san mateo county
