climate weather alert. a storm is headed our way. yes after a week of sunshine, cold temperatures and rain will be here in just a few hours. let's go outside and take a look. it is dry right now, but that is about to change. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now with an updated timeline. hi, jeff. hey. and that storm system, it's just a few hours away. we'll get you a look right now at the satellite radar picture. and it's just off to the north. let's go ahead and zoom in and show you northern coastline right now, getting the moderate and a few heavier pockets right over eureka, where they've seen about a 2:45 quarters of an inch of rain over the past couple of hours. still

going to take a little bit of time to get here. but i do think by the time we get to 5:00 in the morning, it's over cloverdale and guerneville with heavy rain, and then it will start to fill in over the north bay by 7:00 and begin to move into san francisco. now everybody is in for some rainfall here as we head through tomorrow, heavy at times. wind gusts southwest 15 to 35. a major temperature drop down 15 to 20 degrees. and check this out. sierra snow, 1 to 2ft may actually bring road closures. i've got more looks at those updated totals coming up in about 15 minutes. thank you jeff. you can follow tomorrow's storm as it moves through your neighborhood by downloading our nbc bay area app. all you have to do is just scan that qr code on the left side of your screen with your smartphone, and it will take you directly to that free app. well, the incident ended hours ago, but the effects are still being felt by drivers along interstate 80 tonight, a major backup along the freeway is still slowly clearing. the result of a police standoff with a shooting suspect. nbc's pete

serratos has the details. hour after hour, commuters waiting to get where they had to go. tonight, drivers along interstate 80 east into fairfield tonight, all because of a police standoff on the freeway. the traffic getting so bad some had to pull over. when i see on the ups it's red for a long, long distance. i was coming here to fairfield. i just got on right there and then i said, oh, and i've been here for, i don't know, an hour and a half or so. according to chp, the incident began this morning along 101 in santa rosa with the suspect shooting at a woman inside of an suv. she wasn't hurt, but was able to give police a description of the suspect's car, which was located in a shopping center. the suspect refusing to stop for police, leading them on an hours long chase through marin county over the richmond-san rafael bridge along i-80 into fairfield, with the chase coming to an end after the driver hit a spike strip at the 680 interchange, the suspect sat in the car, leading to an hours long standoff during friday rush hour, causing a ten mile backup

in both directions. he's only one way. yeah, right. no, don't have another street. maybe another option friday nights to be expected. but this is like, insane. reporter. just after 630, police remove the driver from the car. he was rushed to the hospital. westbound lanes were reopened shortly after, but eastbound traffic continues to move at a slow pace. the case is now under investigation by the solano county da's office. we reached out for an interview but have not heard back in solano county, pete serratos, nbc burying news over to santa clara county. now tonight, two officers are recovering from gunshot wounds after a shootout inside a san jose motel. san jose police believe the suspect was going to shoot a mother and three children. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran is live at san jose police headquarters with more. and jocelyn, what do we know about the suspected gunman? yeah, janelle, the suspect had a long criminal history and police say the gun he shot at officers with was stolen. one of the officers was treated and

released. the other officer remains in critical but stable condition. the acting police chief calling them brave and courageous. tonight, two officers are recovering after a shootout with a gunman on thursday night at the extended stay hotel on san ignacio avenue. erika nava says she was staying a couple of doors down from where the shooting happened on the third floor. i thought i was dreaming and heard like fireworks, and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, bam, bam bam. police say the front desk clerk called on behalf of a guest that said a man she knew was knocking on her door. earlier that evening, the same guest reported that same man, someone she had a restraining order against, was on his way to her location. that man was 33 year old kevin briones, a convicted felon with a long criminal history. police say this body cam photo shows officers confronting briones in the third floor hallway. that's when police say briones reached into a duffel bag and pulled out a stolen gun. the suspects fled, running away from the officers while continuing to shoot

multiple rounds at them. at least one officer returned fire and. struck the suspect. briones jumped from the third floor onto the ground. officers located and arrested him nearby. one of the officers shot was hit in the shoulder. sources say. the other was hit in the upper body, knee and thigh. inside the hotel was a mother and three children. police believe briones was coming to shoot that mother and the children. it became apparent that their lives were likely saved by the responding officers in the room was a survivor of a recent domestic violence attack. we learned that the suspect had an arrest warrant for that domestic violence incident. acting san jose police chief paul joseph says this incident highlights three epidemics illegally possessed guns, the dangers of domestic violence cases and the violence officers face every day in the last 15 months. 12 san jose police officers have been shot at by criminals. mayor matt mahan said. they also need to better address repeat offenders and continue pushing to fully staff the police department. last night's events offer a stark reminder of the solemn oath they

take to protect and serve our city, and the immense personal risk they assume. the officer who is in critical but stable condition, has about one year of experience. on the force. he is affectionately called the rookie by his fellow officers because he has about one year of experience as far as the suspect. he is in stable but critical condition in san jose. i'm jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. jocelyn, thanks very much. new details tonight about a deadly crash in pleasanton that left a family of four dead. we have learned just days after the crash, the owner of the car filed a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration. the owner claims that previously had steering problems with the electric car. a 2023 vin fast vf eight that's manufactured in vietnam. the owner says they lent the car to a coworker, taron george. george was driving that borrowed car when it crashed into a tree and

burst into flames. he, his wife and their two children were killed, according to the federal complaint. the owner of the car worries george may have experienced the same steering problem when the crash happened. the nhtsa is now investigating. it has been nearly two weeks since pro-palestinian protesters first set up tents on uc berkeley's campus. protesters say they have no plans on leaving until the university meets their demands. now, among those demands, divestment from any company that does business with israel and the administration's support of a cease fire tonight, the camp has over 150 tents filled with supporters, and organizers expect that number to grow as the pro-palestinian demonstration gains ground and incidents increase. some jewish students worry about their safety on campus. the university has beefed up security and is providing an escort service for concerned students. new at 11, a major bust breaks up an illegal gambling den in san francisco. narcotics officers served a search warrant on ellis street

in the tenderloin district last night. they arrested the person suspected of running that operation, a 45 year old woman from oakland. officers also seized more than a dozen illegal gambling machines, a loaded firearm, 3000 bucks in cash and drugs. sfpd says the bust is part of its efforts to address the drug crisis in the city. a 65 year old mechanic is recovering after surviving a hit and run in the east bay. as nbc bay area's jodi hernandez reports, police say they managed to track down the driver. thanks to license plate reader technology. she was on the phone or she was with the hair like this and the other hand and the steering wheel, and i said, hey, watch out, watch out. 65 year old rene cisneros describes the terrifying moment he saw a car driving straight at him. cisneros had just left his lawn mower repair shop on buchanan road in pittsburg. he stepped out of his car to lock the gate when a woman in a mercedes hit him, driving over his feet and knocking him back into his car. but instead of stopping, she

just kept going. when did you have a car? is a weapon you have in your hand? because this lady, he she didn't care. why she. why? don't stop. cisneros was knocked unconscious. he had to be flown by helicopter to the hospital. luckily, his injuries aren't too bad. my feet hurt. my stomach hurt. my shoulder hurt. a few hours later, thanks to automated license plate readers, police tracked the driver down at her home in walnut creek and arrested her. the 36 year old woman now faces felony hit and run charges. the worst thing you can do is to leave that compounds when there's an injury . obviously, leaving a scene of an accident is never the right thing to do. but if somebody is injured and you leave that scene, you just created an absolute, criminal mess for yourself. if he she stopped right next to me, he asked me,

do you need help or i'm sorry, i got a mistake or whatever. believe me, i don't think nothing wrong. cisneros wants the woman to face serious consequences and says he's grateful to have survived such a scary situation. i feel lucky, really. i think, god, what? always be with me because this thing happened. you know, i'd be dead already in contra costa county. jodi hernandez. nbc, bay area news. more robo taxis are coming to bay area streets in the coming weeks. waymo is going to start testing its driverless cars across the peninsula and into the south bay. this is part of the company's plan to expand from san francisco all the way down south to sunnyvale. the pilot program will only be available to waymo employees. for starters. eventually, everyone will be able to get driverless taxi rides. this comes amid pushback from county leaders and state regulators concerned about the safety of driverless cars. we're back in 60s just ahead, travelers,

it's about the rising number of assaults that are happening on airplanes. sexual assault aboard

an aircraft is a federal crime. in 2023. the fbi says it opened 96 cases based on a sex assault that occurred in the air. the fbi says most happened on long flights when the cabin was dark and victims were usually sleeping in a middle or window seat under a coat or jacket. an attorney who represents victims of this kind of crime says his clients no longer feel safe on an airplane. sexual assault is traumatizing in any context, of course, but it can be especially shocking in a public setting, like an airplane. none of us expect to fall asleep during takeoff and wake up to being groped, lindquist added. there could be a silver lining to these spike in cases. it could reflect an increased willingness to report these cases of sexual assault and more willingness from the fbi to investigate. tips to protect yourself include being aware of your surroundings, keeping the armrest down in between these

seats, and requesting a seat change. if you are not comfortable. investigators now say arson is likely to blame for a fire that destroyed a popular east bay barbecue joint. the fire happened at horne barbecue in oakland. this was last november. now, just last week, the restaurant reopened in a new location. investigators had always considered the fire suspicious. now, new evidence found at the scene indicates someone did set it intentionally. so far, no suspects. new orleans has a bourbon street. memphis has beale street. could san francisco's nightly hotspot be front street? downtown that's what the mayor's office and local bar and restaurant owners are hoping for. the 300 block of front street is already the go to party spot on saint patrick's day, but if a newly proposed ordinance is passed, that part of front street would look to become a nightly hotspot. a recently passed law written by state senator scott wiener would let bars and restaurants on the block serve alcohol to customers in the streets. the goal is to

attract the kinds of crowds seen at first thursday events. it is clean. it is safe. it's sunny, it's flat. i mean, it is the great pedestrian place to be. i think. imagine he still has to approve an ordinance describing what will be allowed in a special entertainment zone. san jose continues looking for solutions to increase safety and the vibrancy of its downtown. here's the latest idea helping five small businesses open pop up shops in vacant storefronts. that goal is to bring more people to the area. vacant scenes have been an issue in downtowns nationwide since the pandemic began, so san jose decided a good way to attract business convert empty stores into temporary pop ups. today five minority owned businesses open on paseo de san antonio near san jose state. this is a dream come true for us and we are so thrilled to welcome all of you in the community. loves small business and that is exactly what we are here to do. i'm so excited to serve the san

jose community. yeah the storefront activation program is part of the city's budget. each shop got a $3,000 grant to renovate their space and the city is subsidizing the rent. san jose is getting ready for a whole bunch of parties. two cinco de mayo parades and festivals this weekend. it all starts tomorrow. the cinco de mayo car show begins at six in the morning, ends at three, according to san jose downtown. that's happening in front of the sap center. that car will be there. then at 1:00, the salsa festival starts at plaza de cesar. chavez is going to be food, salsa music and dancing and if you're traveling into san jose, get ready for road closures. a section of barack obama boulevard is going to be closed from west santa clara street to west saint john street. that starts at 9 a.m. part of west santa clara streets also going to be closed from stockton to barack obama boulevard. the roads will reopen at four in the afternoon. also, one lane of south market street around plaza de cesar chavez is

going to be closed. that begins at one in the afternoon, ends at 9 p.m. the. check out the road closures for sunday's festivities. you can visit our website nbcbayarea.com. we now have a date for when iconic highway one and big sur will reopen. you remember back in march, a portion of the southbound lane fell into the ocean after heavy rains. right now, cars are only allowed through in convoys twice a day. today, governor newsom announced the road will reopen by may 25th, which is memorial day weekend. and he says the feds will help pay for these repairs. we'll look for the federal government to support our efforts, and we're signing emergency proclamation to be able to draw down federal dollars to do just that. to reopen the highway, crews will install a temporary signal and traffic will be subject to alternating one way traffic control. you know, all i could think of when we were reading about the cinco de mayo weekend tomorrow and sunday, what it's going to be like weather wise. half good for the car show tomorrow. they are going to get some rainfall, so just be ready

for that. if you're headed out there on saturday, by sunday we're going to clear it out for cinco de mayo and for really anything else you have planned this weekend. that storm system, a one day event for us. let me show you the satellite radar picture right now, and we're beginning to see that rain move in across the northern coastline . we'll take it into the rain forecast. also, the colder temperatures right now in your microclimate weather. and as we head through tomorrow morning's forecast, here's a look. we expect that to start rolling in around cloverdale and guerneville at 5:00 in the morning, with some heavier downpours. should be over all of the north bay here by 7:00 in the morning. then we'll see this quickly move down to the east bay and peninsula at 9 a.m, yellow and orange indicating that heavy rain. and then this would continue into the south bay by 11 a.m. now, a lot of this really should get out of here by tomorrow afternoon and evening, with just a few lingering spotty areas of rainfall. but because that zone of heavy rain is going to hit all of the bay area, rain totals have actually increased. we're looking at anywhere from a to half three quarters for most of

the bay area, so pretty sizable here for a may storm. this is really kind of characteristic of what we should see in about february. and for some of the higher elevations, notice that red color. that's where we could see about one inch of rain throughout our local mountains. sierra snow. it's going to stack up and fast through tomorrow afternoon and evening. in about a ten hour window, we could see about 21in up towards kingsville, 20 in kirkwood, four in pollock pines, with that snow level starting around pollock pines. so with all that snow in a short amount of time, we may actually get into some road closures. so be careful if you're headed up to the sierra tomorrow morning, temperatures grab the jacket. we're back down in the 50s for most of the bay area. that will put us at 53 here in the south bay over to san francisco, 50 for daytime highs after 70 and 80s this week. this is going to be real hard to get through tomorrow. 55 up towards santa rosa 56 martinez upper 50s down here through the south bay. okay, if this weather isn't for you, we do have some hotter weather on the way. i wanted to make sure

into the air. the air quality district is now weighing an abatement order to compel tesla to address the problem. tesla has yet to respond to these allegations, as it was a fun filled four legged scene in san francisco today, but with a serious message here. the special event at civic center plaza is called paws for pierce's players, put together by two groups, pierce's pledge and united players. and if you talk to the united players, you're talking about rudy corpus. it included a series of dog competitions, both athletic, athletic and amusing. the event was an effort to unite the community against gun violence. young people, especially, were there to share their stories of being impacted by gun violence, all in a really pleasant, upbeat setting. organizers held a fundraiser for a gun buyback program, as well. all right, the red hot oakland a's. that's right. you heard that correctly. and it's hard to believe. but they're doing it. red hot a's back in action tonight in oakland. while the
