are hosting debut on the show this weekend. dua lipa is hosting and performing on tomorrow's episode. the singer has previously performed on snl in 2018 and 2020, and after this week, there's just two more shows left in the season. actress maya rudolph will host next weekend, and in two weeks, it's actor jake gyllenhaal. but this is the first time dua lipa is host. wow, a lot of people will be watching. she's got an awesome voice. she does super great, great entertainer. sunday weather is going to be a beauty.

[ cheers and applause ] yes! well, you guys, new york city is buzzing right now, 'cause the knicks and the rangers are both moving on to the next round of the playoffs! [ cheers and applause ] so to everyone in new york city, happy tres de mayo! party, let's do it! [ cheers and applause ] whoo! yeah, new york sports teams are on fire right now. even the jets were like, "hey, technically, we didn't lose this week either. so, boo-yah!" [ laughter and applause ] yeah, it's a big sports weekend, 'cause tomorrow is the 150th kentucky derby.

yeah. [ cheers and applause ] the kentucky derby goes back 150 years, yeah. even more impressive, president biden has been to every one of them. [ laughter ] isn't that amazing? that's right, tomorrow is the kentucky derby, and get this, last year's winning horse, mage, is retired. [ audience aws ] and now he's a stud. [ audience oohs ] which means he gets paid millions of dollars to breed all day. >> steve: wow. [ cheers ] >> jimmy: we actually have a a picture of the stable that mage is in. let's see if we can remember which one is mage. can we see a picture? which one is --? [ laughter ] i guess there -- i think mage had white -- i think it was like, mage had white hair, right? mage was the white horse, yeah. >> steve: i think so. >> jimmy: that was it, yeah, perfect. anyway, moving on, everybody, this weekend is cinco de mayo and the kentucky derby. so i thought it'd be funny to explain cinco de mayo using all of the names of all 20 horses in this year's kentucky derby. [ light laughter ] i'll give it a shot. okay, here we go.

[ cheers and applause ] cinco de mayo is a holiday that represents mexico "catching freedom" from the french. but most people use it as an excuse to party. and at first when the bartender offers you some tequila, you say, "just a touch." [ light laughter ] but two hours later you're shirtless, giving a mechanical bull an "epic ride," while screaming, "i'm 'forever young!'" it doesn't matter if you prefer corona, modelo, or a "domestic product." [ light laughter ] before you know it, it's 4 a.m. and you're talking "endlessly" to the bartender about how life's hard, unless you have "resilience." he's like, "this is what's wrong with 'society, man.'" [ laughter ] you're throwing out words you don't even know, like "catalytic." [ light laughter ] all of a sudden the bouncer hears the "dornoch." [ light laughter ] he says, "t.o., password"? and the voice says, "stronghold." so, he opens the door, and in walks a stranger named "mystik dan." [ light laughter ] he tells you you're a ghost hunter who likes to "track phantoms." pretty soon you two are doing

peyote, and getting matching back tattoos that say "fierceness," and "grand mo the first," and "honor marie." [ laughter ] you don't even know who marie is. finally, you head home, but you're too drunk to call your own car, so you "just steel" someone else's uber, fall asleep, and wake up in "west saratoga" or "sierra leone." [ bell dings ] there you go. [ cheers and applause ] we did it. ♪ thank you. thank you. anyway, enjoy the fastest two minutes in sports, everybody. speaking of the fastest two minutes, trump's hush money trial with stormy daniels is still going on. [ cheers and applause ] well, here's you in the movie. here's you in the movie, and there's -- there's you and margot and ryan. and then here's you at the oscars performing at the oscars. >> what a face. [ cheers and applause ] what a face, what a man. >> jimmy: wait. what was it like? was it exciting? >> it was. it was exciting, because it was dangerously close to being disastrous. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: it was? >> yeah, we had -- so, i mean, i don't know how long ryan had with it, but we got the call relatively late in the game,

and we show up for -- so -- so, the oscars are on sunday, we show up for the first rehearsal on thursday, which is in studio with ryan and his choreographer, mandy moore, who's amazing. they worked together on "la la land." >> jimmy: oh, yeah. and so, we're -- we're there for the first time, you know myself, ncuti gatwa, kingsley ben-adir, scott evans, the kens, and, of course, ryan. and we -- and we spend like hours and hours going through this choreography. we're like, "okay, i think we can -- i think we can do this. and then friday comes around, and we're in dolby theatre, 'cause it's like a stage -- it's not a dress rehearsal yet, but we're on the stage. and we show up. and first thing we realize was the choreography's completely different. it somehow changed entirely from thursday to friday. >> so we're like "okay, yeah, we'll -- you know, we're working with it." saturday, we're getting costumes, we're doing a dress rehearsal. and we show up again, and we realize that the choreography is completely different, again. so, it's just changing constantly, every single day. and we have on saturday night, like our -- what was supposed to be our only run-through in costumes. and we do it, and it goes so poorly, not for anyone -- not

for any other reason than it's just, like, logistically it's 70 kens, 70 dancers on stage with a steady cam that's, you know, a big thing that's kind of moving around stage. >> jimmy: yeah, you have to know where you're going. >> and so, i think something had caught on the camera. one of the dancer's like costumes had caught. and so, you know, when everything's moving and the one thing catches, it's like -- it's -- you -- you can't finish. so, it just -- everything just kind of stops. >> jimmy: and it's a live show? >> and it's a live show, so we immediately -- we come back from saturday and we're just like, "wait, are we just gonna -- are we just gonna wing it on sunday?" [ laughter ] and then, you know, it must have been like midnight we get home. and we get a call from the oscars, and they're like, "we need you to come in on sunday." so, this is day of the oscars, we get called in for the last, last rehearsal because we sucked so bad the night before. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it was one of the most talked about, best performances, i think we've ever seen. >> we pulled it off. >> jimmy: it was flawless. you definitely pulled it off. >> thank goodness. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: it was great, top to bottom. >> thank you, thank you. >> jimmy: everybody was great.

[ laughter ] you're an ai robot. >> yeah, a.i. robot, and you're trying to kill j. lo. and you're kind of also j. lo's, like, weird sibling in a way. and i was like, "okay, this is not what i signed up for at all." >> jimmy: yeah, this is -- this really is acting. >> jimmy: but also, how great is -- everything she's does, i mean, she's been on the show a a million times, and she is a a perfectionist. >> consummate professional. >> jimmy: and just works and works, and practices, and rehearses, and shows up and just nails everything. >> yeah. >> jimmy: so, you fighting her, was that hard to do? >> it was -- um, it was, it was tough, i mean, you know, for most of the movie i think -- i think you can see in the

trailer jen is in a a 20-foot-tall mechanical exoskeleton with like gaveling guns and things attached to her and i'm just, kind of, me. [ scattered cheers ] >> i'm a huge nerd. >> jimmy: talk to me. >> and i was -- i've always been obsessed with, just, history and how people have evolved. and i was watching the show "vikings," and i was just, "woah." >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. my wife loves that show. >> oh. that time period -- >> jimmy: i don't know it. i don't know it. she loves "vikings." >> it's interesting. but then i was thinking to myself, i was, like, "in this time period, what was happening in west africa?" who knows. i did a whole bunch of research, it was very difficult to find that information. but that was a whole journey for me and, yeah, i definitely went on a huge mental, emotional journey with this -- with this book. >> jimmy: and you wrote this awesome book. i'm so excited about this. and "black shield maiden" is the name of the book. it'll be out may 7th, is that correct?
