6:00 pm
t. but first, we want to start with the breaking news we've been following for the last 90 minutes. a standoff on 80 in solano county, causing a traffic night there for drivers on 80 and 680. see that gray car right there surrounded by police cars and trucks? chp says officers chased this driver through three counties, beginning in sonoma county in rohnert park. that's where a woman first reported someone shot at her while she was on 101. officers tracked down that driver he sped off, sparking a chase that took them all the way to fairfield. our sky ranger was overhead for part of that chase. a suspect is in that silver car right there. police use spike strips and the car skidded to a stop on eastbound 80. but both directions of the freeway are shut down while police try to get that suspect out of the car. now, here is the major backup on 80 due to the lanes being closed. it is massive again. both sections of the highway closed right now near green valley road and the 680 intersection that goes on and on . there's obviously no telling how long it's going to take for
6:01 pm
that scene to be cleared. we're going to continue to bring you more information as it comes into our newsroom live. look right now at our traffic map anywhere you look, it's just not good traffic at 8680 basically going to a standstill. the red there. we're going to keep you watching this for we'll watch it for you. and we'll update when police finally make an arrest. and when the chp finally begin to reopen that freeway. all right. our other top story tonight, two san jose police officers are recovering from gunshot wounds after a shootout inside a san jose motel. one of those officers remains in critical but stable condition tonight. police believe the two officers actions saved the lives of a woman and three children. and we do have team coverage tonight. robert honda is at regional medical center, but we begin with damian trujillo at the police headquarters, where a briefing on that late night shooting wrapped up just a short while ago. damian yeah, well, the chief, the acting chief says that this is what officers sign up for, to put their lives on the line for others. and the calls the officer's actions last

night, heroic investigators were still collecting evidence at the extended stay hotel on san ignacio avenue in south san jose, 12 hours after a gunfight sent two officers and the suspect to the hospital. police say that gunfight all started with a call and a confrontation with an armed felon. they responded to a common and seemingly ordinary call of a disturbance at a hotel. a woman called police saying a man who she had a domestic violence restraining order against 33 year old kevin briones, was on his way to the hotel, police say. this body cam photo shows officers confronting briones on the third floor hotel hallway. that's when body cam video shows him reaching into a bag and pulling. what police say is a stolen gun. seconds later gunshots rang out. the suspects fled, running away from the officers while continuing to shoot multiple rounds at them. at least one officer returned fire and struck the suspect. erika nava says she was staying two doors down from the shooting on the third floor. i thought i
6:03 pm
was dreaming and heard like fireworks, and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later bam bam bam, the suspect jumped off the third floor and onto the parking lot, where additional responding officers arrested him. inside those two officers were dealing with the wounds. one applied a tourniquet to his rookie partner not yet realizing that he himself had been shot. tonight one of those officers is recovering at home the other remains in critical but stable condition at the hospital. all i could see was blood and glass outside the room, acting chief paul joseph believes the gun briones was carrying was intended for the woman and three children hiding inside that hotel room, it became apparent that their lives were likely saved by the responding officers in the room was a survivor of a recent domestic violence attack. we learned that the suspect had an arrest warrant for that domestic violence incident. while officers may have prevented more bloodshed, the acting chief says the case highlights disturbing trends, from felons with guns to
6:04 pm
the increasing danger of being a police officer. what unfolded last night was an intersection of at least three epidemics that demand outrage and action. in the last 15 months, our department is alone has had 12 officers shot at, with five of those officers being struck by gunfire. and that shift that responded to last night's shooting will, they're on duty right now. again, some tell me they are ready for the next call. relevant police headquarters in san jose. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. damian, thank you very much. and tonight we're also learning key details about the two officers and the wounds they suffered. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us live with the new information about the officers and the gunfight. robert barnsdall art park well, we understand that the officer who was critically wounded and is affectionately called the rookie by his coworkers, he is still recovering here at regional medical center. and as you heard damian mentioned, he remains in critical. but stable condition. now, as you know, the rookie officer was one of two officers
6:05 pm
who confronted the suspect who you heard was identified as kevin briones. the other officer , i'm told, is a transfer from nypd. he's the veteran of the two, having been here three and a half years now. sources say the younger officer was shot three times, once in the upper body also in the knee and in the thigh. his partner was shot in the shoulder, and that bullet went down his side and hit his hip bone. law enforcement sources tell me. he remained composed and fired back, hitting the suspect. he then treated the younger officer. the incident has both onlookers at the shooting scene and the mayor expressing concern and appreciation on our officers. families got the call. they always dreaded and prayed would never come and we got a reminder of the courage it takes to put on the badge every day. 100% scary. you think you would just breaking something up and it became something much more terrifying. i think it's terrifying. any thoughts for the
6:06 pm
cops who were recovering, i hope they they mend well, and they're back at the job and not being deterred from doing their job. again, that sentiment is shared by a lot of officers here. he remains in critical but stable condition, and the officer is home and recovering. live in san jose. robert honda, nbc, bay area news. robert, thank you. not too long ago, another san jose police officer was fighting for her life after being shot in the line of duty. it happened in august. a convicted felon shot a female officer in the chest while she and a partner responded to a family disturbance. that man then barricaded himself in his house. paramedics took the officer to a hospital, where she did recover and survive, and she wasn't the first sapd officer to be shot. last year, another was hit in the hip after being ambushed by a suspect that happened last february, and that officer was not seriously injured. we will have another update on this story tonight at 7:00, with analysis from a law enforcement expert. we will continue to
6:07 pm
share updates as we get them online and on the nbc bay area news app. all right, switching gears right now, let's talk about the weather. and wow, that's a beautiful shot. it was a beautiful day. looking out from emeryville towards the bay. fantastic. but see the clouds coming in those clouds are serious this time. tracking some rain this weekend. jeffrey neary's got the story of the rain. jeff i know, i know what a what a major turn we're going to see in the weather as we head through this weekend forecast. after what we experienced today these above average temperatures we got all the way up to 79 in santa rosa, above the average of 7279 there in concord and san jose at 76. so the storm system right now is just off to the north. we're going to start to see that drop down here as we move into the bay area. by tomorrow morning early on here over the north bay at 5:00. and then it still kind of mainly hanging out over the north bay by 7 a.m. and then starting to push into san francisco. so as that rain gets here tomorrow morning, we can expect certainly some heavy

lawnmower repair shop on buchanan road in pittsburgh. he stepped out of his car to lock the gate when a woman in a mercedes hit him driving over his feet and knocking him back into his car, but instead of stopping, she just kept going. when did you have a car? is a weapon you have in your hand because the lady. he she didn't care. she. why don't stop. cisneros was knocked unconscious . he had to be flown by helicopter to the hospital. luckily his injuries aren't too bad. my feet hurt. my stomach hurt. my shoulder hurt. a few hours later, thanks to automated license plate readers, police tracked the driver down at her home in walnut creek and arrested her. the 36 year old woman now faces felony hit and run charges. the worst thing you can do is leave that compounds when there's an injury. obviously leaving a scene of an accident is never the right
6:10 pm
thing to do. but if somebody is injured and you leave that scene, you just created an absolute, criminal mess for yourself. if he she stopped right next to me, he asked me you need help or i'm sorry, you got a mistake or whatever. believe me, i don't think nothing wrong. cisneros wants the woman to face serious consequences and says he's grateful to have survived such a scary situation. i feel lucky really. i think god will always be with me because this thing happened. you know, i'd be dead already in contra costa county. jodi hernandez nbc, bay area news. new details tonight about a deadly crash in pleasanton that left a family of four dead. we have learned. just days after the crash, the owner of the car filed a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration. the owner claims they had previously had steering problems with the electric car. a 2023 vinfast vy f eight. it's

county. again at that park. while that woman first reported getting shot at on 101, causing major traffic jam on the highway again at 80 near the 680 intersection in solano county. we are hearing it is almost ten miles of traffic so at this point we are keeping a close eye on this. you can see police now surrounding that vehicle. they are getting much closer now compared to the first time we started following this. but we of course will continue to stay on top of this and bring you the latest information as it comes into our newsroom. protesters at uc berkeley are saying even though school ends in a week they have no plans to leave campus while campus police and other universities across the nation have stepped in, uc berkeley says it has no plans to involve police unless students safety is threatened as nbc bay area's velena jones explains tonight, pro-palestinian protesters are celebrating their growing movement as other students are questioning safety on campus. reporter eldridge to come speak here at berkeley.
6:16 pm
it's been nearly two weeks since protests first went up at uc berkeley. those tents are filled with pro-palestinian protesters demanding the school divest from any company that does business with israel. in support. calls for a cease fire tonight, demonstrators say they believe their message is being heard every day, more campuses are going live with their own encampments, and i think we are all really united in this struggle to get these universities to divest. grad student matthew kovac is moving into the encampment that's grown to over 150 tents tonight. he says last night's berkeley student government resolution supporting calls for divestment shows progress in their movement. i think it really gives the lie to the idea that this movement is rooted in anything other than anti-racism anti-imperialist ism, full solidarity. but as the encampment grows some jewish students say they're beginning to worry about safety on campus. they say there have been multiple verbal and physical
6:17 pm
confrontations since the demonstrations started, because of the obstruction of public space and the fact that it's a central place that people need to transit through it creates danger for students who are visibly jewish or who are perceived as opponents of the encampment. addressing safety concerns, the university has launched a new student escort service and campus police are investigating two incidents, including a law. students claim that they were punched in the face by a person involved with the camp. police are also looking for suspects. in another on campus confrontation over an israeli flag. three people were injured in that incident. the pro-palestinian demonstrators say the suspect in that case was not part of their group. what we are seeing this is this is not going away. this is escalating. this is ratcheting up. and i, i really the bottom of my heart, i , i am wracked with worry. organizers say they're in negotiations with the university
6:18 pm
and have no plans to leave until their demands are met. there will be no rest until we divest. people are here for the long haul in berkeley. velena jones nbc, bay area news. investigators now say arson may be to blame for a fire that destroyed a popular east bay barbecue joint fire happened at horne barbecue in oakland last november. now, just last week restaurant reopened at a new location. investigators had always considered the fire suspicious, but say new evidence found at the scene indicates someone did in fact set it intentionally. so far, no suspects memphis has beale street new orleans has bourbon street. well, could san francisco's next nightly hotspot be front street in downtown? that is the hope for the mayor's office and local bar and restaurant owners. the 300 block of front street is already the go to party spot on saint patrick's day. but if a newly proposed ordinance is passed that part of front street would
6:19 pm
look to become a nightly hotspot. goal is to attract the kinds of crowds seen at last night's first thursday event, just a few blocks away. nearby business owners say that the location is great for locals getting off work or out-of-towners coming from anywhere around the bay. the city still has to approve an ordinance that describes what will be allowed in a special entertainment zone. all right. oh that'd be awesome. yeah it would, jeffrey nero joining us now. and you got some splaining to do as they say. well are you happy with the rainfall or not? i could do with that. i know. yeah it's a tough go here on may and coming on our weekend, but we are expecting some sunshine to come in as we head through the weekend forecast. once we get over this rainfall. and then i am promising some hotter weather down the road for us. so let's get a look at the storm system. there's nothing we can do to get this out of here. right now. it's 180 miles here. off to the north as that storm will be dropping down on your saturday. it's a one day event though. we get it in here on saturday, then by sunday it gets
6:20 pm
on out of here. so the timeline on this does have the rainfall starting around 5:00. marin napa sonoma counties will still be in it over the north bay at 7:00. and then as we head through 9 a.m, it's over the east bay and peninsula. notice the yellow and orange. those are some heavy downpours. we'll see with this storm system. and by 11:00 in the morning it's down to the south bay. but at the same time, we're still hanging on to that rain up into the north bay. will eventually see this. get on out of here as we head through tomorrow afternoon and evening. rain totals. impressive because of that heavy zone of rain we're expecting right now to hold up all the way through the bay area. we'll see totals anywhere from a half to three quarters for lower elevations. but look at this area in red here. that's where our mountains could get in on one inch of rainfall. so a pretty strong hit here for may coming our way for tomorrow. sierra snow may actually close roads. we're looking at totals at the highest elevations. 21in kingvale, 20 in kirkwood, four inches there in pollock pines. with those snow levels starting
6:21 pm
around pollock pines. so this is going to be a lot of snow in about ten hours. so that's why we may see those road closures as we move it into tomorrow morning's forecast. we'll start it off chilly. as you get the umbrella. make sure to have that jacket. we're down 54 here for the peninsula and we'll stay with those low to mid 50s from the east bay to the north bay. temperatures for tomorrow. this is it. after 70s and 80s this week. this is going to be real hard to get through here. 56 in napa tomorrow 54 in half moon bay, 59 in san jose. now, if you can pull anything good about this weather, if you've had some allergy problems that rain should help you out. we're expecting it to go to the low category on saturday and sunday. you want warmer weather? we have it. just got to wait for it right here in san francisco. we're up into the 70s next wednesday, thursday and friday and we'll go from that 59 up to whoa 85. wow. next thursday. so we got a really nice weekend coming in by next weekend. sure, it's a short wait to get that
