part of san francisco into an entertainment hotspot. the new proposal that could help revitalize the city. good friday everyone. the news at five starts right now. thanks so much for joining me. i'm janelle wang. we're going to begin with that breaking news as people are trying to get home or out of town this friday evening, a standoff on the freeway has i-80 in solano county shut down in both directions. this is near the 680 junction in cordelia. we want to show you video from nbc bay area sky ranger. you could see this major backup on 80 miles long. both directions of interstate 80 shut down right now near green valley road, and the 680 intersection. the backup about ten miles in every direction. let's take a look at the traffic map right now. and you can see the red. you can see both directions eastbound and westbound of 80. and also 680
5:01 pm
northbound getting on to 80. the chp has no idea when this interchange will reopen, when 80 will reopen, or when this scene will clear up. and it's going to be a while, because take a look at why this is video of the standoff going on right now. officers chase the suspect through three counties beginning in sonoma county in rohnert park, where a woman first reported someone had shot at her car while she was driving on 101. officers located the driver , but he took off. that sparked a chase that took them all the way to fairfield. police put down spike strips ahead of the car where it was then disabled, and it skidded to a stop on eastbound 80. now both directions, like i mentioned, are shut down as police try to talk the suspect to get out of the car. they believe he could be armed. so a very ongoing situation. lots of police cars. you can see a swat truck parked right there and the car right

there in the middle. it looks like in the number one lane. so the situation unfolding as we speak. we'll keep you posted throughout this newscast. and you can also get updates online at nbcbayarea.com and on our nbc bay area app. right now, though, we are going to go to the south bay, where two police officers and a suspect are recovering from gunshot wounds after a shootout inside a san jose motel, one of those two officers remains in critical condition and we've learned police believe the suspects bullets were actually meant for a mother and her three children. nbc bay area's demetrios at police headquarters, where briefing just wrapped up a short while ago. and damian, please give us an update on this investigation. well, janelle, that shooting rattled a lot of people here at police headquarters in san jose. and tonight, the acting police chief is calling the officer's actions as heroic. crime scene investigators were still at the extended stay hotel on san ignacio avenue, 12 hours after officers and the gunman fired at
5:03 pm
each other. erica nava says she was staying two doors down from where the shooting happened on the third floor. i thought i was dreaming and heard like, fireworks. and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, bam, bam, bam. it all started with a call to police late thursday night, a woman called and said a man who she had a domestic violence restraining order against 33 year old kevin briones, was on his way to the hotel, police say this body cam photo shows officers confronting briones, a convicted felon, in the third floor hotel hallway. that's when police say briones reached into a duffel bag and pulled out a stolen gun and started shooting. the suspects fled running away from the officers while continuing to shoot multiple rounds at them. at least one officer returned fire and struck the suspect. the suspect jumped from the third floor to the parking lot, where responding officers arrested him. both officers who confronted him were injured, but we're told one of the wounded officers applied a tourniquet to his rookie partner, not realizing he himself had been

shot. the more severely injured officer is expected to survive but remains in critical condition. tonight inside the hotel room, feet away, was a terrifying mother and three children ages eight, ten and 15. acting chief paul joseph says the stolen gun briones was carrying was meant for them. it became apparent that their lives were likely saved by the responding officers in the room was a survivor of a recent domestic violence attack. we learned that the suspect had an arrest warrant for that domestic violence incident, the acting chief says the incident highlights three deeply troubling epidemics felons in possession of a gun, the dangers of domestic violence cases and the violence officers face every day in the last 15 months alone, 12 san jose police officers have been shot at by criminals. tonight, to our recovering after risking their lives for a family they've never met. we're also told that the suspect in this case, briones, remains at a

hospital. he too is in critical but stable condition. we're live at police headquarters in san jose. i'm damian trujillo, nbc, bay area news. thank you, damian and we are getting more details about those officers involved and their injuries. there has been a heavy police presence around regional medical center in san jose, where one of the wounded officers is now recovering from surgery. sources tell us he was shot in multiple times, taking hits to the upper body, the knee and the thigh. those sources also tell us the officer is affectionately called the rookie by his colleagues, because he's only been on the force for a year. again, as damian mentioned, he's listed in stable in critical but stable condition. law enforcement sources also tell us his partner was shot in the shoulder and was the officer that wounded the suspect. bystanders at the shooting scene, as well as the mayor, are expressing their deep concern for the officers and their families. we need to work to better address repeat offenders so our officers don't
5:06 pm
have to continue arresting the same people over and over again. will they threaten our community ? we need to get illegal guns off our streets. the police chief says both officers are expected to survive their injuries. unfortunately, this has happened before for the san jose police department in the last 15 months, five officers have been hit by gunfire. in august, a convicted felon shot a female officer in the chest while she and a partner responded to a family disturbance. paramedics took the officer to a hospital, where she recovered and survived, and she was not the first san jose police officer shot last year, another was hit in the hip after being ambushed by a suspect that happened in february 2023. that officer fortunately, was not seriously hurt. it's a devastating reality that san jose police are putting themselves in the line of fire
5:07 pm
for the community. in 2015, veteran officer michael johnson was shot and killed while responding to a welfare call. he died at the scene a year later. officers dedicated a portion of northbound highway 87 to officer johnson. the section, renamed san jose police officer michael johnson memorial highway. we are going to switch gears now and talk about our weather, microclimate, weather. big changes are on the way. let's go outside right now. you can't tell it's coming. live pictures of san francisco and san jose. walnut creek not a cloud in the sky. blue skies, a beautiful day, lots of sunshine this evening. gorgeous today. but that's not the case for the start of your weekend. rain is moving in and moving in fast. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. jeff what is the timeline for this latest storm? well, i really see this hitting as we head through tomorrow morning and let's first take a look at those temperatures today. we're all out in it. we had that sunshine really comfortable 75 in santa rosa 79. concord, 75 in
5:08 pm
livermore and san jose at 76. but that storm system, it is knocking on the door here, so to speak. and this one is going to pack a punch. so it's already starting to bring rain up towards the pacific northwest. we'll take you to the closer radar view right now. and some rain now approaching the northern coastline. it's going to take a little time to get here, but we really think we'll start to get that rain developing through marin, napa, sonoma counties around 5:00 in the morning. and then this will start to move towards san francisco and stay up towards the north bay through about 7 a.m. and notice those areas of yellow and orange. that is some very heavy downpours that will eventually make it throughout the bay area. so when it comes to the storm system, not only the heavy rain, but winds 15 to 35. i don't see any wind damage out of this, but make sure to have that jacket temperatures dropping 15 to 20 degrees sierra snow could be as high as 1 to 2ft at the higher elevations. that could actually cause some road closures. i've got more
5:09 pm
looks at this storm system and the totals that are off the charts for this time of the year. you've got to see how much you're going to get. i have that forecast in about ten minutes. okay. off the charts. wow. okay. thanks, jeff. following the storm and as it moves through your neighborhood storm ranger, our meteorologist, you can follow it all by downloading our nbc bay area app. all you have to do is scan that qr code with your smartphone and that will take you directly to our free app. new orleans has bourbon street, las vegas has the strip. now san francisco wants to add front street to that list of entertainment hotspots. a newly announced proposal aims to take advantage of a new state law that allows the city to create entertainment zones. here's nbc bay area sergio quintana in san francisco. who's ready to party on front street? this part of front street in downtown san francisco is usually the party spot on saint patrick's day, but a new proposal aims to make this the go to street party spot all year. this entertainment zone
5:10 pm
will provide an opportunity to make it easier to get to yes to make it easier for us to create those opportunities. according to mayor london breed, this block could look like the first thursday event the city hosted in downtown last night, except more often the idea is to shut down this block of front street in downtown san francisco and turn it into a regularly occurring entertainment zone, essentially the first of its kind in the city. and in the state. a recently passed law authored by senator scott wiener would allow the bars and restaurants on this block to serve alcohol to customers in the street. that's something they're barred by state law from doing during a street fair or other special event. you can bring an outside vendor in to sell beer with a special permit, but the mom and pops, the bars and restaurants locally owned on the street can't participate. sb 76 changes that rule, but it only affects san francisco and the city still has to approve an
5:11 pm
ordinance that describes what will be allowed in that special entertainment zone, and mayor london breed says she wants to waive fees for events like street fairs and this special zone. local business owners say if it's approved, it could breathe new life into the neighborhood. i think initially it's going to be a one off event here. try and get some regularity. maybe it's a first thursday or a first friday type of thing, and then it goes into maybe it's all weekend. the city already hosts a special daytime dining zone a few blocks away on commercial street, but the idea of the front street evening entertainment zone is to give people who work downtown a reason to stay here after work and to attract more potential residents to the area. the proposal still needs to be approved by the board of supervisors in san francisco, sergio quintana. nbc bay area news. a small theater with big dreams in the heart of san francisco's chinatown. we'll take you backstage of the renovated great

westbound. eastbound. this is at the 680 interchange. northbound six 8280 also backed up for about ten miles. there's a standoff going on right now with a possibly armed suspect that police chase from sonoma county. all the way here to solano county, where they disabled the car with spike strips. an armored team is now there in a standoff, with the suspect trying to resolve this situation. we'll keep you posted right here at nbc bay area we are celebrating asian american native hawaiian pacific islander heritage. and tonight i'm going to take you backstage to a nearly 100 year old theater in the heart of san francisco's chinatown, in the historic great star theater, located on jackson street, is a nonprofit. it's undergone extensive renovations and cleaning since the pandemic. new owners brought the theater back to life, and it's now helping to revive a community. from the outside of the great star theater in san francisco's chinatown, 1st may not expect to see this inside. built in 1925,
5:15 pm
there's so much history as you walk in old show posters and theater equipment. the 400 plus seats have been re-upholstered, but are still the same frame from nearly 100 years ago. martial arts legend bruce lee used to come here. what i heard is the bruce lee's parents used to perform literally on this stage. he used to hang out in the alley or in the backstage waiting for them. alice chu and roger pinkham own the place. it's also where their relationship started. there's actually a show that i was helping usher at, and i invited her for our first date, and he gave me a tour around the theater. so i feel very special now married with a young child, alice didn't know that their first date would lead to this new venture. when roger comes home and tells you, oh, we have this opportunity to sign a lease with this place, what did you
5:16 pm
what was your reaction? every time i just pass by, i feel like, oh god, this guy is crazy. i was an engineer. i'm still an engineer. like how do i run that theater? it was like, too crazy dream for me. but eventually the opportunity arised and he convinced me and we just made the big jump. that big jump came with risks and a lot of doubt. the theater was falling apart. there were rats. there were birds living in the ceiling, crapping all over the seats. there was no heat, there was no hot water. the bathrooms were disgusting. there was mold downstairs. it was it was bad. i cried, it cried. it's too much. it was a lot. so what was the initial investment? you had to do to renovate it? the landlord calls me up in june of 2020 and was like, you know, roger, you still want the great star. it's been a community effort. you know, we put a maybe $100,000 in. it was a lot of elbow grease and a lot of money. but we made it work. the couple reopened the theater in the summer of 2021.
5:17 pm
since then, it's hosted a few hundred different shows like chinese operas. those are really cool because they bring a lot of the local chinatown community in people that used to come to this theater when they were children, and to bring more people into the neighborhood. there's a popular star wars burlesque parody which is coming back this summer. they brought 40,000 people into chinatown over the course of three months. every day it was sold out and the line was like a few blocks away. and the vertical show a poll, an aerial performance featuring world poll champions is why i'm the producer. i'm the director, and i'm an artist and performer in the show as well. paulina volchek, also known as pink puma, travels the world performing. she's been back to great star theater six times. a vertical show has been existed for probably five seven years at this point, but we were always
5:18 pm
looking for a permanent location for this amazing sporting show. i really love the theater. i enjoy the stage, and i think this theater deserves to have much bigger show and bigger opportunities. so this is the backstage. this is stage right? we've got our amp rack over here . this is the rope. so we are a traditional proscenium theater. we've got all the backdrops up there. wait hand manually. yep, yep. this is the altar that the chinese opera still prays to whenever they come in. this is kind of a makeup area, but the main changing rooms are downstairs. down here was actually really gross. alice actually painted this this mural here. wow. this is more than just a theater. so many people have a story about great star. it's revitalizing a community. people started coming by, you know, like older chinese people that, you know, they'd be like, oh, i used to. my uncle used to work in the concession stand. i used to come here and watch kung fu movies every day. so it's exciting to be able to balance,
5:19 pm
you know, giving the community a space for the community and bringing people to the community, which helps everyone else in the community. a love story that has turned into something so much more. next year, the great star theater will celebrate 100 years, and by the way, roger works at the theater full time. alice. she still keeps her day job as an engineer. that's how they pay the bills. oh my god, it is a nonprofit. but it's a successful one and i'm going to go visit very soon. i know, me too. it is on the list. it looks phenomenal . yeah, it's beautiful in san francisco at the great star theater, but i can't believe the changes that are so dramatic coming in right now. i know we've been looking at the weather models all week long, and everything is still on track for us to get this big time change in the weather, rainfall coming in colder temperatures, and the sierra snow that's going to stack up. let's take you outside to our satellite radar picture and let me show you the storm itself. right now it's tracking about 200 miles to the north, so that will start to move in by tomorrow morning. we're going to get you right back to this in about 30s. but i
5:20 pm
do want to take it into our current forecast. if you're doing anything tonight, just to let you know, we don't need any kind of umbrella. might need a light jacket in san francisco 62, and we'll keep it partly cloudy through 8 p.m, then eventually later tonight, clouds increase and we're down to 55 here at 10:00, right near the bay. i have 65 here. and sunshine. we're also in the 50s later on tonight. and talk about a beautiful night. all of our inland valleys right now reading in the 70s with those sunny skies. and we'll dip it down here to 64 by 8 p.m. all in all, very comfortable. and again, no umbrella needed as we roll through this evening. now that storm system, it's dropping in tomorrow for a one day event for us. so we get it in here on saturday. then it gets out of here by sunday. rainfall timing on this. we haven't really seen too many adjustments on this. i think overall the biggest change today and what we're seeing is that it looks like more of a widespread zone of some heavier rain. and that's how our totals
5:21 pm
are going to be increasing a little bit here for us. so by 5:00 in the morning it's mainly over cloverdale to guerneville, starting to move into santa rosa. then as we head 7:00 tomorrow morning, marin napa, sonoma counties will be in it starting near san francisco. then it moves to the peninsula and east bay by 9:00 in the morning. then we continue with that rain in the south bay by 11 a.m, but notice at 11 a.m. we're still into that rain up towards the east bay and the north bay. and now eventually this should try to get out of here by the afternoon and the evening on saturday. so totals with this again increasing. right now we're locked in for to half three quarters throughout the entire bay area. but notice the higher elevations. this is the new thing today. we could actually see through our mountains and possibly even the east bay hills, maybe up to an inch. i mean, this is way out of whack for us this time of the year, so be ready for tomorrow. wet weather umbrella. we're going to be in for sierra snow if you're headed that way. may actually cause road closures.
5:22 pm
all of this snow is expected through the afternoon and evening, so in about a ten hour window we're going to see 21in kingvale, 11 south tahoe and 20 in kirkwood. snow starting right around pollock pines. so cold weather all around through california. morning temperatures are going to dip back down here to the 50s with that jacket and umbrella needed throughout the bay area. this will put us to 55 in the east bay, north bay at 53, and daytime highs for tomorrow. get ready for it after 70s and 80s this week. that's it. 56 in napa, 57 in concord, 59 here in san jose on the 7-day forecast. we dried out on sunday. stays dry as we head through next week and warm upper 70s in san francisco by wednesday, thursday and friday. and look at this 59 tomorrow to 85 on next thursday. kind of a roller coaster, no doubt. i like this ride. yeah, not too bad. not too bad at all. thanks jeff. coming up, president biden gave out the presidential medal of freedom this afternoon to a
