tv   NBC Bay Area News at 430  NBC  May 3, 2024 4:30pm-5:01pm PDT

4:30 pm
north bay. our nbc bay area sky ranger is over a standoff on i-80 in solano county. this isn't far from the 680 junction,
4:31 pm
he tells us. this started in sonoma county after the suspect shot at a woman's vehicle. she wasn't hit, but the suspect's car was spotted in rohnert park, triggering a chase that has crossed three counties, ending right here in fairfield. this is video from just moments ago as our sky ranger stays over the scene. all directions, both directions of the freeway, are shut down while police try to get that suspect out of the car. i want to show you our traffic maps now, showing that backup now. no word yet on how long it could take for the scene to be cleared. it is a developing situation, but you see all that red on that screen. that means traffic is at a standstill in many directions. we, of course, will keep you updated throughout the evening. you can also get updates online and on our news app. there are no words that can convey how thankful i am that our officers and the mother and children they were protecting all made it to see the morning.
4:32 pm
also at 430, a violent night in san jose as two officers get into a gun battle with a man accused of domestic violence. and we continue our coverage of a somber night in san jose. two officers shot, as i mentioned, during that gun battle with a domestic violence suspect. one officer still fighting critical injuries at this hour. it all started late last night at a hotel on san ignacio avenue in the santa teresa neighborhood before 11 p.m, police say that the suspect was trying to reach a woman he'd previously attacked while she was hiding in a room with three kids. officers arrived, went up to the third floor of that building, saw the suspect walking away from the room. and today, police revealed this screenshot showing the moment the man pulled a gun out of his duffel bag and then started shooting both officers were hit and a rookie officer was critically wounded. the suspect allegedly jumped from a
4:33 pm
third story window to escape. police say that man, identified as kevin bruins, was arrested after being found hiding nearby. once other officers arrived, he is said to have multiple warrants that made it illegal for him to have a firearm. he is now in critical condition at a hospital but is stable. acting chief paul joseph praised the actions of his officers. today i am thankful our officers survived a gun battle with a very bad individual and for them stepping into the line of fire to ensure the safety of a mother and her children, i know that i could easily be here delivering very different news today. this outcome is a result of courageous san jose police officers who answered a call for help and were willing to sacrifice their own lives to save the lives of people they had never met. let's go ahead and bring in our robert honda, one of several reporters we have following the story for us today. robert you are outside of the medical center where that officer is being treated. do we know how he's doing right now? yes, we do. and i've also been on the phone with a number of
4:34 pm
different people who knew the officers involved here, the officer that has been affectionately called the rookie because he's basically been there for one year, is still recovering here at regional medical center. he has been described as in critical but stable condition, and the chief today said that he is expected to survive. and that is pretty amazing considering some of the things that happened to him. i have been told by sources that he was shot in the upper upper body, and the bullet traveled down his body, past his lungs and colleen. and so it was a very serious gunshot wound. he was also shot in the knee and the thigh. his partner in that incident is more of a comparative veteran, because he's been at san jose for three and a half years. he was shot in the shoulder, and that bullet traveled down his body and hit his hip bone. but he was able to recover and he is has been treated and has been released.
4:35 pm
robert, i know you've been in that area all day. what has the scene been like at that hospital? there have been a lot of police cars, a lot of heavy police presence because they knew these two officers involved. i've been told by different people that know the different officers. first of all, the rookie that they call him is considered extremely compassionate and they said a very righteous person. they said that he was a he is a san jose guy, an all around san jose guy, possibly raised here, as well as, having been a top recruit, they said, and did very well at the academy and they said he joined law enforcement for all the right reasons. other police officers are probably checking on their friend, the veteran, he has been described as a very, composed person. a number of people said that he was very composed at the scene, even
4:36 pm
though he had been shot in the shoulder. he actually treated the wounded officer and applied a tourniquet that actually helped save him. probably helped save his life. and at one point he said he didn't actually realize he was wounded because he was so busy helping the other officer. and i've also been told he was the officer who fired back and shot the suspect. so a lot of concern by a lot of officers here today. sure. all right, robert, thank you for that update. appreciate it. and i know our damian trujillo is going to be continuing our coverage tonight at 5:00, with the new details. we are learning about that shootout. okay. we're going to go ahead and switch gears now and talk about our weather as we take a live look outside from a few of our traffic cameras. just a beautiful day to day, but it's going to be a mixed bag on this cinco de mayo weekend. i'm with meteorologist vianey arana now with what we can expect. mixed bag i think is a great description of what we've got ahead. audrey because saturday
4:37 pm
it's going to be one way, sunday it's going to be another. but we've got you covered so you can plan it out. now, if you look at the temperatures right now, we are seeing 70 still on the map. so high pressure is help keep us warm and comfortable. but if you look at the icons, audrey, we've got clouds on standby with the arrival of a cold front. let's get right to your microclimate forecast. now that's going to bring not only cloud cover, also a decrease in those temperatures. your hourly forecast for san francisco. this is what it looks like right now. if you notice temperature wise we're at about 63 degrees. but also you'll notice the wind speeds as well from the west 2030 plus miles per hour. those gusty winds are expected to remain not only for today, but also for your saturday. let's talk satellite radar now. right now, most of us are clear, but look what's into our north in the pacific, right there. there goes that next system that's going to swoop in timing wise. i will guide you through that. but temperature wise for saturday at about 3 p.m, we're going to notice only daytime highs hitting upper 50s low 60s. now compare that to the 70s we've been enjoying. you're certainly going to notice the cooldown. so what time does the rain move in
4:38 pm
if you follow me right here saturday 7 a.m, you'll notice it'll first start out in the north bay santa rosa areas north of the golden gate bridge, advancing this timestamp forward till about 12:00. so we're talking your lunch hour. it will make its way down through parts of the south bay. some periods of moderate rain over santa cruz. and yes, what you're spotting here is sierra snow. so if you had plans to travel to the sierra, definitely make sure to check those travel conditions. good news though, this is at about 9:00. you'll notice the majority of that system will have made its exit. and as we inch closer into sunday, we're going to notice cloud cover. but that rain will be out of the area. so the mix back concept comes from that. you get one rainy day and then into sunday it'll still be somewhat cloudy, but at least the majority of the rain will be out of here. snow estimates right now kind of impressive. i mean, considering this is kind of a quick moving storm. we've got over 20in and some of those higher peaks. we'll see how that plays out leading into saturday and sunday. but please check those travel conditions. it will be crucial if you plan on getting up there any time for tomorrow now and next saturday, rain, wind and cool temperatures dry sunday next week we do have
4:39 pm
a gradual warm up, so make sure to join us once again at 5:00. chief meterologist jeffrey will have more details on rain totals and the extended outlook coming up. audrey. all right dan, thank you. it's been nearly two weeks now since pro-palestinian protesters first set up tents on uc berkeley's campus. protesters say they have no plans on leaving until the university meets their demands. among those demands, divestment from any company that does business with israel and supporting a cease fire. tonight, the camp is over 150 tents filled with supporters and organizers expect that number to grow as the pro-palestinian demonstration continues. some jewish students worry about their safety on campus. we take, you know, great encouragement from what we're seeing at other campuses every day. more campus issues are going live with their own encampments, and i think we are all really united in this struggle to get these universities to divest it structures how our students move around campus, whether they even
4:40 pm
come there anymore. i, i cannot even begin to convey to you how disturbed i am. and how much i fret about this. the university started increasing security yesterday, and providing an escort service for concerned students last friday, a law student was allegedly punched while filming the demonstratione injured during a confrontation over an israeli flag. our investigating both incidents. more robo taxis are coming to bay area streets in the coming weeks. waymo is going to start testing its driverless cars across the peninsula and into the south bay. it's actually part of the company's plan to expand from san francisco all the way south to sunnyvale. pilot program will only be available to waymo employees for now. this comes amid pushback from county leaders and state regulators concerned about the safety of driverless cars. go ahead and take a live look now

at downtown san jose. the city continues to look for solutions to increase the safety and vibrancy of the area. the latest idea helping five small businesses open pop up shops near san jose state. nbc bay area's ian cull was there as they opened today, and ian, this is something that the city is subsidizing. yes, yes. so the city, the downtown association and other business leaders came together with the goal of filling vacant storefronts, vacant storefronts and, you know, vacancies, as we've been reporting, have been an issue since the pandemic began, not only here but in downtown corridors across the country. so san jose decided a good way to attract businesses is to allow for those empty stores to be converted into temporary pop ups. well, today, five minority women owned businesses opened on paseo de san antonio de san antonio, near san jose state. they include a candle shop, an import store. there's also a business selling crystals and plants. prior to this, the business owners have been

4:43 pm
should always make sure that our small businesses have the opportunity and the resources to open up a brick and mortar in downtown san jose, and that is slowly happening. a lot of excitement down there. not everybody is celebrating, though. one business owner tells me that they were not thrilled that they still have to pay full rent while businesses, you know, right down the street might be getting some subsidies. the downtown association, though, says that they're working on building more of these. they're going to be opening another one on post street in the coming months, we think. and the shops that you saw there down in the paseo will be open for at least a year. okay. all right. ian, thanks so much. appreciate it. of course. look at this san jose getting ready for two cinco de mayo parades and festivals this weekend. all starts tomorrow. cinco de mayo car show starts at 6:00 in the morning. it's going to end at three. that's happening in front of the sap center. and then at 1:00, the salsa festival starts at plaza de cesar chavez. there will be

girls an opportunity to discover and engage in stem. scientific adventures for girls is based in oakland, and meteorologist vianey arana is here to give us more insight. vienna, can you talk to us about how exactly this organization got started? absolutely. i was first introduced to this organization about a year ago, right around this same time. and this time around, i had a chance to connect with the executive director. she's also the co-founder, courtney carr. she says watching her daughter grow up and knowing her herself was not from a stem background, she started looking for organizations that could provide that stem education for her daughter. when she looked online, she couldn't find any. so that's where we get scientific adventures for girls. and it came to life. now, this program offers after school stem programs starting at tk through sixth grade, with a special focus on low income families and communities of color. their efforts have been noticed across the u.s. they have grown since i last met with them last year. they were chosen as one of the national stem leaders in two events. the most recent at the

white house. it's called summit on stem equity and excellence propelling progress and prosperity. by 2050. and here are some of the key takeaways. and this was something that we specifically we, promoted was title one schools across the nation should have high quality stem education in the after school space so that all children can start early and especially in elementary school, and often to engage them in stem. so okay, so they're starting early. they're getting engaged. they're getting into stem, can you talk about the kind of activities they're working on right now? of course. and you know, she focuses on, you know, seeing young girls in the space in science. but she said she also has a son and she wanted to show her son that there are women who are taking up space in science as well. and they even host a family activity night. so really, it's a group effort across the board. and i did ask her about some of the activities they do everything

from space to, you know, physics to math, engineering, but they're also learning about how to protect our planet earth and the latest is all about sustainability. take a look. they're doing environmental sustainability. so once a week for seven weeks they're getting, to do a project around sustainability. some of the ones that they've already, done or they're doing, they're building an electric car. they learned how to, you know, what happens when you have oil spills and how you do a cleanup, they're building a wind turbine, wind turbines, solar ovens, they're learning how to be botanists. and so simple things. yeah. those are the futures of tomorrow. absolutely and, you know, they want to invite families to get involved in these after school programs. they're completely free. they're hands on. they invite mentors and women across the bay area who are working in active stem jobs so that they can see themselves in this position.
4:52 pm
also, a lot of their participants are spanish speakers. so if you are a volunteer, you are bilingual. they welcome that. i also want to note that the executive director will also be flying in this weekend. she's going to be recognized by alameda county. she's going to be indicted into the women's hall of fame for her efforts in stem education and equity. that's incredible program. i'll make sure to include the link in this story on our climate crisis tab. sounds great ryan. thanks. got it. so we're learning that a fire that destroyed a popular barbecue restaurant in the east bay six months ago is now being investigated as arson fire happened at horn barbecue in oakland last november. and just last week, the restaurant reopened in a new location in oakland. investigators had always considered this fire to be suspicious, but say new evidence found at the scene indicates that someone set it intentionally. so far, there are no suspects. i'm at the anchor desk now with our janelle wang working on the 5:00 news. hi, audrey. happy friday, happy friday. you know, we've done plenty of stories about the ways
