peaceful protest in america, violent protest is not protected. peaceful protest is. it's against the law. when violence occurs, destroying property is not a peaceful protest. it's against the law. vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations. none of this is a peaceful protest. the president continued to say the protests have not forced him to reconsider his policies, and his administration is continuing to press for a ceasefire deal in gaza along with more aid to relieve the region's humanitarian crisis and bring hamas held hostages home. counterprotest meanwhile, are making themselves heard at the university of pennsylvania members of the israeli american council gathered calling for an end to the ongoing encampment of pro-palestinian activists on the school's campus. supporters of israel say the protests are turning into hate speech, and universities need to crack down on it. pro-palestinian students

the camp no, no, none of us knew who disappeared immediately after. we're not sure who this person is, who just grabbed a flag. we spoke with a member of the uc berkeley davis coalition who reiterated the same point, saying the person who grabbed the flag isn't part of the camp. we set a wall in between both, not group, but we set a wall around them to ensure that nobody can try to frame this against us in any way. and we were the ones who pulled back this, this person who tried to grab the flag. according to the university, there was a brief period of skirmishes on sproul plaza yesterday between a group of counter-protesters and some of the protesters in the encampment, three people reported minor injuries. uc police will pursue investigations into the attempted robbery and alleged assault. the security group, which consists mostly of students and community members volunteering to make sure that the campus stays in order, that we don't, cause disruption in at unexpected levels is trying

their best. i don't think anyone holding any flag should be assaulted. we spoke with a rabbinical student not from the university, but on campus today about the situation and the encampment. this just feels like some students who are trying to politically express themselves and i think, not necessarily the most guided direction. those with ties to the encampment say they're trying to stay focused on their goals. our goal is for this university to divest in the same way that they to divest from israel, in the same way that they divested from south africa. christie smith, nbc bay area news. all right, christie, thank you. our raj mathai will speak with political analyst larry gerston on how the biden administration is addressing the university protest and how this will affect his presidential campaign. check out that live interview at seven on nbc. bay area news tonight. rising crime in oakland has been a constant concern on the mind of businesses, residents and city officials. but now there's promising signs with new data showing efforts to reduce crime are working in the town. nbc bay area's velena jones is talking

credit each month to help them get around town. it was paid for through a grant from the state air resources board. jia, i've interviewed a few extreme endurance athletes over the years and have learned a little about what they need to succeed. there's training the body, of course, but there's also training their minds. how will they motivate themselves to keep going when things get tough? for one north bay athlete, the answer to that is easy because he knows someone who has it pretty hard. you know that saying about when in rome, doing what the people around you are doing? well, when john verdin moved to marin county a few years ago, lots of people out on bikes, out on trails, and it was a big impetus for me to say, well, if we're living here, i should be taking advantage of that. so john started out by biking, but then a friend asked for help, placing him on an ultramarathon and john switched over to running. to prepare, i went to the race, paced him for about 2627 miles, and i was
5:15 pm
like, i love this. like the sense of community within, within the running space, within the ultra community. and so as soon as i got home, signed up for my own 100 k race. and when that went well, john went looking for other bigger challenges and found a huge one on the other side of the world, the marathon de sables. six days and 160 miles of pure punishment across the sahara desert. so much sand and so much heat that by about the third day, john was wondering if this time he'd asked a bit too much of his body. there were moments where, like, you're running out of water, you're tapping your energy reserves and like, why am i doing this? hey, dude, how are you doing? well the answer to that question for john was clear. did you see any snakes? its buddy. you know, i didn't. buddy is john's ten year old nephew who has spent nearly half his short life battling osteosarcoma. he has been through a number of different
5:16 pm
treatment cycles, went through a number of different chemo cycles originally, and then the decision was made to actually amputate his his knee. and so when things got really tough in his trek across the desert, john had only to think of how tough a journey buddy has been on to know what real perseverance looks like, the incredible resilience, both emotional, physical and mental. here of how he lives. his day to day life has been something that sticks near and dear to my heart, and john even used the marathon as part of a fundraiser for mib agents, a pediatric osteosarcoma nonprofit. the idea being that if john can conquer something like the sahara desert, maybe one day doctors can conquer diseases like buddy's. it's all he says about being up for the challenge. how do we get that out there and show to the world that anything is possible? wow. amazing. not only. i mean, just finishing. yes. just finishing. absolutely. wow. and john
5:17 pm
doesn't have a long career ultramarathoning. but out of about 1000 runners, he came in 40th. oh my gosh, that's. and the first finisher of all the americans. oh my gosh. i mean he has something to run for. which is exactly. and the mental part of that is so, so important because there are going to be challenging times. he talked about like a 54 mile day in 130 degree, oh my gosh, so taxing on your body to be able to get through that. absolutely. absolutely wonderful. that's phenomenal. no. 137 the temperature in the in the forecast. thankfully thankfully not. yes. sunshine some 70s and 80s. we have one more day of this before we start to get into some colder weather. and yes, those rain chances they are hanging on as we head through your weekend forecast, let's take it into that microclimate weather and we'll get you another view of this blue sky out here to the east bay and walnut creek, and currently 77 degrees a breeze out of the west southwest at 17mph. just making it comfortable, not looking at any kind of damaging wind here through tonight or tomorrow. we're going to dip it down here to 72 by 7 p.m. so comfortable
5:18 pm
through the next few hours and then eventually some low 60s here at ten and also 11:00. now i'm confident we will get that one more day of sunshine and warm temperatures from this area. high pressure. it's moving off towards the east, but it's still going to block the storm track here, at least for now. then eventually this storm system that's going to be moving closer tomorrow will start to get here by saturday morning. i'll have those timing and totals here in about a minute, but let's roll it right here into tomorrow morning's forecast. we're back down again to 54 here through the peninsula san francisco have you in the mid 50s and the same thing here for the east bay. so not too many changes across those microclimates as you head out the door through tomorrow morning. daytime highs will cool off a couple of degrees but nothing too substantial here. we're still looking at lots of 70s beautiful weather tomorrow afternoon here for the south bay 77 in cupertino, 78 milpitas and those upper 70s for morgan hill and gilroy will hang in the low to mid 70s here from oakland down to fremont. and you get out
5:19 pm
towards antioch will be at 80. the peninsula sunshine a little bit breezy here at times 10 to 20 mile per hour gusts and 74 here in redwood city. san francisco. also gusty at times, up to about 25 for the gusts. sustained winds at 19 and a chilly 59. here in the marina we have that ocean breeze and that's why we're not able to get any 70s here across san francisco tomorrow. and right here for the north bay 77 in napa. so we got that sunshine tomorrow. but here comes that rain as we head through saturday. and every single parameter i'm looking at here in our weather office continues to show this happening on saturday. i still don't see any way we head into dry weather through the weekend. so the timeline on this right now, it is kind of condensed to saturday morning, starts to get here around 4:00 or five and 6:00 up towards marin, napa, sonoma counties and those areas in yellow also orange. those will be some heavier downpours at times. we think this will get down to the peninsula in east bay by 8:00 in the morning, and certainly to the south bay by 11 a.m. then all of this should start to wrap
5:20 pm
up here by the late afternoon and begin to move out by about 4:00. rainfall totals still locked in for quarter to a half inch. some of the higher elevations in that slightly orange and darker orange color could see about three quarters of an inch. so pretty good hit here of rainfall for may 10 to 25 times our normal daily rain rate of about two hundredths of an inch. look at this sierra snow. one day totals 21in kingsville 12in. tahoe, 20. in kirkwood. snow starting around pollock pines. we may see some road closures just because it's so much snow in a short amount of time, so be ready for those winter conditions. but here's the best part we clear it out on sunday. it will stay cool, but at least it's a dry back half of the weekend. we'll go down to 59 on saturday and then we'll see it go back up to 68 on sunday. so, you know, at least we've had beautiful weather through the workweek. and then we're giving you that gift on saturday. gift? yes most weekends this year i
