wild chase through multiple bay area counties as a shooting suspect avoids several attempts by police to spike the car's tires. it led to an hours long standoff that shut down interstate 80. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz the whole thing. finally came to an end just before seven this evening in fairfield. it shut down the freeway at green valley road, creating a massive backup. the chp says the suspect was wanted for shooting at someone this morning along highway 101, in windsor. a bullet went through

the back of a car, seemingly chosen at random, and the driver was not hurt. police located the suspected shooter's vehicle three hours later in a parking lot. the driver took off as officers closed in. the pursuit continued across several freeways with multiple failed attempts at spike strip stops where he's really uh- avoid the spike strip, so be careful. >> spike on the right. spike on the right. >> police eventually successfully stopped the car in fairfield. this started a lengthy backup for miles as 8-80 was closed in both directions. eastbound 680 near the cordelia junction was also impacted. drivers saw his left hand on the steering wheel, right hand reaching around center console. a chp officer says the driver was sitting with a gun in his lap as police surrounded his car. the standoff lasted about three hours. officers deployed what appeared to be a flashbang and rounds of tear gas through his back windshield, and we just got an update from the highway patrol investigators. they say they just found out that the

suspect is still alive. emergency crews at a hospital were able to revive him. he is in critical condition. meanwhile, the two left lanes of 8-80 have reopened. the three left lanes are still closed, with chp officers continuing to investigate. it appears there is still a significant backup. now to developing news. two officers are expected to survive after a shootout in south san jose. it happened a the extended stay america hotel on san ignacio avenue and bernal road at 1030 last night. police say 33 year old kevin briones attempted to break into a hotel room where a mother and her three children were. briones, who had a prior warrant, fired shots at the officers and tried to take off after encountering them. both officers and briones were injured while exchanging gunfire. he then jumped out of a third floor window to escape, but was quickly arrested. mayor matt mehan says he's grateful for the officers bravery. >> we got a reminder of the courage it takes to put on the badge every day, knowing you would give your life to protect

the city you love. >> sapd is trying to determine why briones tried to get into the room. the woman, however, did tell police he has a domestic violence restraining order. we've done stories on stores getting rid of self-checkout because of rampant theft. target changed its policy, limiting customers to ten items or less. abc seven news reporter tara campbell tells us about a proposed state law that could change regulations and result in stores getting rid of self-checkout altogether. >> the familiar sights and sounds of self-checkout. >> i like self-checkout because it's convenient, but, it's fast. >> whether a fan or not changes could be coming down the line. >> the hope is that we can reduce the amount of theft that happens. that's a much better solution than punishing theft after it occurs. >> the prosecutors alliance of california getting behind senate bill 1446. the bill would regulate self checkouts in hopes of boosting employment and cutting down on thefts. >> there's data on this that

shows there is theft that happens at self checkouts. >> if voted into law, grocery and pharmacy retailers would have to meet certain requirements or get rid of self checkouts, including upping the number of employees monitoring the stations. >> one of the main deterrents is from theft is that there are staff paying attention in the store to your activities. >> in part, it's codified saying, you know, some requirements that that i think from our perspective, are a little heavy handed as far as you know, getting down into the granularity of how a business or store needs to operate. >> but the california chamber of commerce, coming out against the proposed legislation saying it could hurt business. >> for example, the grocery space where they are operating on pretty thin margins, you know, when you're having to make these drastic adjustments or adjust staffing ratios, that can be a big cost impact. >> the bottom line a concern among shoppers to are we as a consumer, going to have to pay for that, to take it down and redo it or whatever is decided? >> i understand the concern for theft, i'd be concerned, though,

that if grocery stores were required to staff more checkout aisles, that that would be a huge cost increase for them, and they'd pass that cost on to customers. >> tara campbell, abc seven news let's turn now to the weather. >> sandhya patel we have rain on the way for the first weekend of may. yeah. >> can you believe that? ama yeah, we're going to switch it back to winter. we're just hours away from seeing the first drops hitting the ground. let me show you live doppler seven. right now, it is a level one storm. late in the season. it's a cold storm, and it is going to make its presence known. the rain is already moving in across parts of crescent city and eureka tonight as we go hour by hour early tomorrow morning, it begins at 6 a.m. in the north bay. it spreads across the entire bay area. by 9 a.m. there will be pockets of heavy rain. you will see those downpours continuing in the eastern and southern part of our viewing area. at 1 p.m, and then switching over to scattered showers. this storm will be accompanied by windy conditions

as well, so do expect those wind gusts to come up between 25 and 30 miles an hour. and as i mentioned, it's going to be back to winter with up to two feet or more of snow for parts of the sierra, it's a level one rain heavy at times for tomorrow, scattered showers in the late afternoon, evening and gusty conditions with isolated thunder. chance tonight. the biggest story is the fog that is rolled back in ahead of this storm. you can see it from our towercameras live doppler seven, also showing you an increase in the cloud cover and a decrease in the visibility down to a quarter mile and a half moon bay. so if you have early plans tomorrow morning besides the rain, watch out for poor visibility. i'll let you know how the second half of your weekend is looking. coming right up, umma. >> all right, we'll check back. thank you. sandhya, with graduation season getting underway, there's growing concern about the ongoing pro-palestinian protests on college campuses across the country. encampments remain in place at san francisco state, uc berkeley, stanford and sonoma state. they've been mostly peaceful compared to other

locations. earlier in the week, representatives from the american civil liberties union visited the protest area at berkeley to inform the students what rights they have while protesting and what would be illegal. >> the first amendment and california constitutional protections for free speech are incredibly powerful, but they are not absolute. >> both sonoma state and uc berkeley say they plan on having graduation ceremonies as normal, even though they tell us they are prepared for all scenarios. in san francisco, a protest encampment has also gone up at usf, have tents and signs were set up on the lawn near ignatius church. this comes a day after a number of student demonstrators walked out of classes to protest against the israel-hamas war. university officials say they are committed to keeping students, faculty and staff safe on campus. this after tense protests this week, cal poly humboldt tonight extended its full campus closure until next sunday, the 12th. no one is allowed on the premises without prior authorization. the university will now hold three commencement ceremonies at three

off campus locations on saturday the 11th at a casino, theater and high school auditorium. student housing and dining will remain the same, along with move outs. all on campus events have been canceled as the semester comes to an end. this is a story we've been following at 11 p.m. all this week. the effort to revitalize downtown san francisco.oday, we learned about a plan to create an entertainment zone. the area woulbe located in the financial district on front street between california and sacramento streets, and would enab local restaurants and bars to sell alcohol during outdoor events. as abc seven news reporter luz pena explains, it would be funded by a new grant program reporter. >> thousands of people in downtown san francisco having fun. this was the scene during the city's downtown first thursday event, a scene they want to repeat more often in the financial district, with designated areas called entertainment zones. we're changing everything to yes, not only are we saying yes to opportunities to have nightlife

and entertainment and to close down streets, we are actually proposing legislation to waive those fees that people get charged to close down streets. the mayor is proposing to designate front street between california street and sacramento street as the city's first entertainment zone. san francisco is authorized to create these zones under sb 76, a bill authored by senator scott wiener. >> until this year, it was completely illegal in california for bars and restaurants to ever sell onto the street in a street festival. so we have now given san francisco the ability to create these entertainment zones by turning this block of front street into an entertainment zone is still not a done deal. the board of supervisors will have to hopefully pass it. >> the new co-owner of harrington's bar and grill is hoping for the mayor's proposal to pass. he says it's pivotal to

re-energize the area. >> it's not just about capturing the people, getting people to come back to work. it's also about bringing people to downtown from all over the bay area to make it easier for entertainment zones to happen here. >> mayor breed is also offering $500,000 to provide grants for events and activities. >> with that half $1 million, we can fund between 10 to 20 events and activations. >> robbie silver, executive director of the downtown san francisco partnership, says this proposal will bring the boost they need to turn downtown into a destination for the entire bay area. >> we've seen 22 uh, new bars and restaurants open in the downtown, and this is significant to the financial district in san francisco, luz pena abc seven news. >> a special night area kids who might not be able

education center. all right, we want to get back to the weather because saturday and sunday are going to be quite different. sandhya. >> that's right. ama, i think you're sleeping in tomorrow. i am, if it's possible, hibernating is what you said. yeah, it's going to start off stormy. okay, let me just show this to you. accuweather alert a wet, windy saturday for you to start the weekend. standing water on the roadways is what you'll need to watch out for. slippery roads, reduced visibility, wipers on, headlights on and it starts off rainy and turns more showery. there's a possibility of an isolated thunderstorm and hail, so keep that in mind as this storm unseasonal cold for this time of year and pretty potent moves in, it's already starting to make its presence known across the northern portion of california. as we take a look at live doppler seven, you will notice the clouds are increasing. we've got fog out there. the breeze has been going still, although not as strong as earlier. we had gusts to 40 at oakland at one point. right now

it's drizzling in oakland. 29 mile an hour. wind gusts 25 out towards the delta and rio vista. temperatures there in the 50s. but if you stepped outside, you know that wind is blowing the fog in and it feels chillier tomorrow. it's a stormy start. you can certainly see the gray skies from exploratorium camera. much cooler weather sunday and monday, chilly mornings and next week we're talking about dry and warmer days. wait till until you see that accuweather seven day forecast. it's a level one for tomorrow morning. downpours at times, spotty showers follow in the latter part of the afternoon and evening. gusty conditions and as i mentioned, can't rule out an isolated thunderstorm or two. the winds start to pick up out of the southwest at 8 a.m, 3031 miles an hour. it's going to be still pretty breezy at around 1 p.m. once that cold front goes through, the wind switches direction more out of the northwest 31 to 34 miles an hour. you could see where those strongest winds will be. and as we go, hour by hour, rain starts coming in to the north bay at 6 a.m, starts to spread 9 a.m. it's pretty much widespread rain, so if you get a chance to

stay in off the roads, this will probably be the best time to stay off the roads at noontime. still some heavy rain and then at 2 p.m, most of the northern part of our viewing area is just seeing a mix of sun and spotty showers, but it's still steady in the east bay, south bay, santa cruz mountains, 4 p.m. spotty showers. this continues into the early evening hours, becoming more isolated. you will certainly see more sun later in the day. rainfall estimates half an inch to about an inch or more. this is what we typically average for the entire month of may, so we are expecting it in one day. winter storm warning 11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 a.m. sunday. a foot or more over the highest peaks. gusty winds combining with low snow, low elevation snow. you're going to have to watch out 5 to 12in above 5000, but that snow level will be dropping even lower than that. about 4000 to 3500. and that means a few inches possible at lower elevations, 40s and 50s. tomorrow morning you'll need the umbrellas. you'll need the coats. tomorrow afternoon. it's
