and that breaking news is in fairfield, where the chp is in a standoff with the driver they have chased all the way from rohnert park. you're taking a live look now. the chp tells us this driver is armed and is wanted for shooting at someone this morning along 101 in windsor. >> the standoff at the green valley road exit has ■been going on for about an hour now.

interstate 80 shut down in the eastbound and westbound directions near the cordelia junction. we have a live look at the traffic backup. >> all because of this incident the chp had been following. >> i thought i was dreaming and heard, like, fireworks. and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, bam bam bam, and it was the cops. >> let's get back to the story. the chp had been following the driver for about an hour before the car stopped just before 4 p.m, when it lost a tire. that chase then wound through sonoma, marin, contra costa and solano counties before it got to fairfield. chp officers tried to several times to use spike strips to stop the driver. no success though. we will continue to bring you updates on this story as it develops. >> i thought i was dreaming and heard like, fireworks, and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, bam bam bam and it was the cops. and i'm like, what's going on? all i could see was blood and glass. >> now we want to get to our other top story here, a frightening wake up call at a

san jose hotel. gunfire as police respond to a disturbance call two officers and the suspect all wounded. good evening. thanks for being here. i'm julian glover, and i'm ama daetz, one of the officers in the suspect remain in the hospital this afternoon. >> the incident happened at the extended stay america on san ignacio avenue in san jose, santa teresa neighborhood. >> abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey joining us live from the hotel with the very latest, dustin. >> yeah, julian and emma. we are happy to report that both of those officers are expected to survive today. that one officer that you mentioned spent all day in the hospital after being shot, both of them were shot while responding to a disturbance here at the extended stay hotel when a man, uh, was shot at them and he was involved in a disturbance here. he has two felony warrants out for his arrest. the entire city is thankful that both of those officers are expected to survive . >> our officers families got the call. they always dreaded and

prayed would never come. and we got a reminder of the courage it takes to put on the badge every day, knowing you would give your life to protect the city you love. >> some relief knowing two officers will survive after what was a dangerous night in south san jose. acting chief paul joseph says sapd responded to this extended stay america hotel at 1030 thursday night. a woman called 911 to report a man with a domestic violence restraining order was trying to get in the room. police say 33 year old san jose resident kevin briones had a warrant out for his arrest for possessing a firearm while on probation. they say he was recorded on an officer's body cam walking away from the woman's room on the third floor. he was carrying a duffel bag. >> in less than one minute after officers first contacted the suspect, he retrieved a stolen handgun from the duffel bag and fired at the officers. the suspect fled, running away from the officers while continuing to shoot multiple rounds at them. at least one officer returned fire and struck the suspect. both officers were hit during

the gunfire. >> one suffered minor injuries. the other officer suffered life threatening injuries but is expected to survive. you could go to this call a thousand times and nothing ever goes wrong and the thousand and first time is this one. >> and unfortunately for this officer, with less than one year, just about one year of experience, that horrible day was last night. >> police say briones jumped out of a third floor window to escape after being shot by officers, but he was quickly arrested. inside that room, he was trying to get into a mother and her three children, chief joseph is thankful they and the officers all survived the night. >> i can't imagine what his motives would have been other than to do them some serious harm. and it's just fortunate that our officers arrived in time to intervene. and they took that harm. the harm was to them and not to this domestic violence survivor in those children. >> and those two officers are two of the five that have been shot in the line of duty in the last 15 months here for sapd

mayor matt mehan says that more needs to be done to stop repeat offenders from committing crimes once again. and we have to do something to get guns off the street to help support our officers and keep our community safe. we are live in south san jose. dustin dawsey abc seven news okay, thank you so much, dustin. >> i don't think i should be on trial for anything right now. >> that's what serial shoplifter aziza graves told the i-team's dan noyes two months ago. but now a jury has found her guilty on 53 counts connected to more than a year of shoplifting at the stonestown target and other san francisco stores. >> and now dan is back with the very latest on this case. and what's ahead, dan? >> well, julian and umma from dozens of trips to that target, she stole more than $60,000 worth of merchandise. late today, i obtained video evidence from the court file for the first time. you're going to see surveillance of aziza graves breaking the law. it's september 23rd, 2021, just after noon on a thursday. and there's aziza graves at the stonestown target, loading her cart with laundry

detergent. investigators told abc seven the graves would often steal jugs of detergent that can easily be sold in san francisco's illegal night markets. at un plaza, district attorney brooke jenkins told me this afternoon that video and dozens more were crucial to convincing the jury to getting that guilty verdict. >> it appears that those jurors were really heavily relying on being able to see what items she was purchased or pretending to purchase, how she was operating at the self-checkout, and really being able to see the conduct for themselves. >> the jury found graves guilty of one count of grand theft, 52 counts of petty theft. jenkins believes attitudes in the city are changing. >> people should take the message that san franciscans are going to make sure that there's accountability in our city again for this type of crime. no longer do they view it as low level crime. that doesn't matter that when we provide adequate evidence to them that they will convict. >> i talked to you about your

case at some point, at some point, i'd be willing to talk about you. with you for sure. okay, great. >> i began investigating her case last year. in an email to me, graves explained she was using the self-checkout at a safeway, and the machine said payment complete. after putting in just $0.01, i had to figure out how $0.01 could equal 100. she sent me this convoluted tabulation that concludes the actual value of what we call a penny is 0.000001 credits, $100 million, graves wrote. when she told the safeway staff, they said, you are stealing and kicked me out. target was next. i went to target every single day for about a year before i was arrested. at trial, graves insisted she had no mental health issues, but her public defender, scott grant, argued she had a delusion that she actually believed she had paid in full with that penny or a nickel. graves is scheduled to be sentenced later this month. she faces three and a half years in custody. she could get probation, a partial or the full

sentence in custody or mental health rehabilitation. >> there's pretty wide latitude here for what the judge can do. and so we are we are prepared. we will be prepared to make a recommendation as to what we believe is appropriate, but it'll ultimately be up to the judge. >> the jury did acquit graves on that one count that had no surveillance video. the public defender's office declined to comment on the verdict or directly on this case, but released a statement that says, in part, while we don't condone stealing, we cannot condone the ongoing surge of public resources being funneled into carceral punishment. i'm posting their full statement at abc seven news.com umma julian. >> all right. thank you so much, dan. >> appreciate it. >> dan, an animal rights activist who is facing possible jail time for removing chickens from a petaluma slaughterhouse, was in court today. 21 year old zoe rosenberg showed up for today's hearing, backed by a group of animal rights supporters. rosenberg's organization, direct action everywhere, posted videos claiming they found evidence of

animal abuse inside of purdue's petaluma poultry slaughterhouse. she was arrested and charged with four felonies and three misdemeanors for taking sick and injured birds out of the slaughterhouse last june. if convicted, rosenberg could face up to 13 years in prison. >> all right, let's change gears now and check out our weather. >> oh my gosh, rather be there right now, right? we've got some beautiful blue skies out there that people are enjoying as we look at this live image from the boardwalk in santa cruz. but that is about to change soon. >> yes. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel joins us with the first look at the forecast. i'm just going to close my eyes for a day like it didn't happen. >> uh- it's going to be moving through here pretty quickly. julian and umma. yeah, santa cruz looks inviting, no doubt about it. take a look at a live picture from our east bay hills. camera. green hills and plenty of sun looking out towards mount diablo. that's all going to change as a level one storm is going to move in our direction. that cold front will bring steady rain in the morning. it

will be heavy at times. starts in the north bay at 5 a.m. the heaviest rain will be going through. you can see at 9 a.m. across many parts of the bay area. noontime. it's in the eastern and southern part of our viewing area, and then scattered showers will follow behind it. this storm is going to bring the wind as well. 25 to 30 mile an hour wind gusts. as we look at our storm impact scale, this is a level one. rain will be heavy at times in the morning with those scattered showers, breezy to gusty conditions. i'll be back to let you know if there will be an improvement in our weather for the second half of your weekend. ummah. all right, sandhya, thank you. >> we'll check back. we're learning more today about a plan to create an entertainment zone in dowown n francisco. the area would be located in the financial district on front street between california and sacramento streets, and would enable lal restaurants and outdoor events. as abc seven news reporter luz pena explains, it would be funded by a new grant program. >> thousands of people in downtown san francisco are having fun. this was the scene during the city's downtown first

thursday event, a scene they want to repeat more often in the financial district, with designated areas called entertainment zones. >> we're changing everything to yes. not only are we saying yes to opportunities to have nightlife and entertainment and to close down streets, we are actually proposing legislation to waive those fees that people get charged to close down streets. >> the mayor is proposing to designate front street between california street and sacramento street as the city's first entertainment zone. san francisco is authorized to create these zones under sb 76, a bill authored by senator scott wiener. >> until this year, it was completely illegal in california for bars and restaurants to ever sell onto the street in a street festival. so we have now given san francisco the ability to create these entertainment zones by turning this block of front

street into an entertainment zone is still not a done deal. >> the board of supervisors will have to hopefully pass it. the new co-owner of harrington's bar and grill is hoping for the mayor's proposal to pass. he says it's pivotal to re-energize the area, for it's not just about capturing the people, getting people to come back to work. >> it's also about bringing people to downtown from all over the bay area to make it easier for entertainment zones to happen here. >> mayor breed is also offering $500,000 to provide grants for events and activities. >> with that half $1 million, we can fund between 10 to 20 events and activations. >> as robbie silver, executive director of the downtown san francisco partnership, says, this proposal will bring the boost they need to turn downtown into a destination for the entire bay area, seeing 22 uh- new bars and restaurants open in the downtown. >> and this is significant to the financial district in san francisco. >> luz pena, abc seven news just

cordelia junction. people have been backed up in this mess for at least an hour now. we will stay on top of this breaking situation. we'll bring you more throughout this newscast. >> with graduation season getting underway, there is growing concern about the ongoing pro-palestinian protests on college campuses across the country. encampments remain in place at san francisco state, uc berkeley, stanford and sonoma state. they've been mostly peaceful compared to other locations. earlier in the week, representatives from the american civil liberties union visited the protest area at berkeley to inform the students what rights they have while protesting and what would be illegal. >> the first amendment and california constitutional protections for free speech are incredibly powerful, but they are not absolute. both sonoma state and uc berkeley say they plan on having graduation ceremonies as normal, even though they tell us they are prepared for all scenarios. >> swimmers at acalanes high school in lafayette are now trying to get the governing body of northern california athletics

to change some rules they claim are unfair. 13 athletes were blocked from competing at a big meet this weekend because their coach did not submit their entries in time. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has the story. beyond this fence, or tents from dozens of schools from the east bay and the north bay, but one tent is missing. >> the north coast section did not make any exceptions to letting acalanes high school swimmers compete in this weekend's championship meet. >> you know, seeing all the events that i would have swam in is a pretty big slap in the face. you know, i've trained just as hard, if not harder than a lot of the people here walking over on the deck. >> everything kind of came together at once. so it hit us like a big wave. yeah. i mean, we definitely know we deserve to be here. >> these swimmers qualified for the meet, but their coach had an issue while submitting their names and the deadline passed. ncs officials tell us the deadline was strict and no changes would be made. even if they can't swim. the athletes showed up to send a message letter for events. >> yes, i just wish they'd fix this system so nothing like this

ever happens to another team again. >> the ncs mission statement is we do this for the athletes. like this is all for the athletes. i think that if their values really aligned with that mission statement, then they would have fixed this by then. >> the parents and athletes want the ncs to change their rule. they want them to adopt a model implemented by usa swimming. that model includes a deadline to submit names, but also a grace period to fix any errors. >> this is something that never should have happen. it was a quick fix that could have been remedied, and these kids could have been in the pool. >> today, the meet goes on for two days and yes, the swimmers are disappointed they can't be competing, but now they're receiving support from other schools, some of them their rival schools. >> it's a it's a program for the athletes. and i think that it just doesn't make any sense to not let them swim like they had nothing to do with this. i don't think it's fair to punish them for it. >> and the support isn't just coming from other schools. it's also coming from the collegiate level. a parent shared this

thunderstorms already happening over the sierra with mixed precip. right now on live doppler seven, you see the fog inching its way back along the coast. winds have picked up, gusting to 37 at sfo, 25 in san mateo. your temperatures anywhere from the 50s in the city to the 80s inland. so it was another nice day. but it is all going to change from our santa cruz camera showing you what people are enjoying, which is the sun tomorrow. stormy start. much cooler weather sunday and monday mornings. winter like chill will be with us and next week dry and warmer days expected. it's a level one on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale, a light storm for tomorrow. rain will be heavy at times in the morning. scattered showers follow and it is going to get breezy to gusty so if you do have outdoor plans, this is when you can expect the winds to pick up at around 8 a.m. in the morning. after the front passes behind the front in the evening, those winds will pick up once again. so 5 a.m. tomorrow, the rain is moving into the north bay. 8 a.m. you're seeing those downpours across the region and then at 10:00 in the morning, it's

widespread rain. the orange is indicating the heavier rain going into 1:00. east bay, south bay, santa cruz mountains. and then you will notice just scattered showers and even some sun breaks at 4 p.m. but those spotty showers will remain in the forecast through the evening hours before this system gets on out of town. rainfall estimates are pretty much about a half an inch to just over an inch, which is what we average for the entire month of may. so this is going to be quite the soaker. and the sierra we're talking about a winter storm warning tomorrow morning to sunday morning, a foot or more for the highest peaks. looking at the snow level, 5 to 12in above 5000. but those snow levels will be coming down even lower where they could see some minor accumulations. gust 3530 to 50 miles an hour. travel will be difficult. your morning temperatures 40s and 50s as we get into the afternoon. oh, it's going to be a chill when you're in the 80s inland today, and you're only in the 50s and 60s, you're going to feel it. it's going to be windy, scattered showers for your saturday. not to worry, because if you have outdoor plans, sunday is your

and a lot coming up at 530. we're staying on top of that. breaking news in fairfield, where the chp has shut down interstate 80 for a standoff with a driver who is believed to be armed. that driver is wanted for firing a gun on highway 101 in windsor this morning. around 230 this afternoon, police in rohnert park saw the car connected to the freeway shooting and then a pursuit began, eventually ending in fairfield. we are going to have live updates at 530. plus, san francisco bay is projected to rise by several feet in the next few decades. we're going to have an inside look at a nature based alternative that aims to minimize, mitigate the impacts. and a university course offered right here in the bay area is helping career athletes learn financial literacy. some of the big names we're going to hear from the lecturer behind it,
