but the winds are a little stronger today compared to yesterday. we'll find those wind gusts this afternoon about 20 to 35mph. but it's a nice looking day once again. we have sunshine out there. that sun's getting up here very shortly. at 612 we'll have that warm and windy weather today. temperatures away from the coast in the 70s and 80s along the coast. those winds likely closer to 35mph. and then we'll find those winds a little lighter inland. 70s and 80s. look at those temperatures for most areas. but rain is back here over the weekend, reggie. we'll talk about that coming up in seven minutes. >> drew. this morning tensions continue to mount at ucla overnight. police moved in and they started dismantling an encampment. >> we want to take a live look at the campus right now. sunlight up. several protesters have been detained. as you see there. >> many more than several, many more. >> a long line, it looks like more than a dozen there. they're being seen walking away and zip ties. you see them actually standing there, the front of the line going now. abc news reporter trevor ault is there with the latest developments.

>> overnight, from coast to coast, tensions boiling over on college campuses as protests over israel's war in gaza grow more confrontational, a massive police presence moving in early this morning, beginning to break up encampments at ucla, the lapd declaring a citywide tactical alert as officers in riot gear responded to crowds. it comes just one night after that pro-palestinian encampment came under attack by pro-israel activists. the lack of police action that night since called into question university police responding to the criticism, saying the campus leadership, not law enforcement, owns the results of their decisions. classes at the school now canceled and here at ucla, we've watched as law enforcement has moved in against this encampment. they basically have them surrounded and pushed up against this building. it has been largely peaceful so far. those demonstrators have said that they don't have any weapons, but certainly we are

expecting a large number of arrests here from los angeles. trevor ault. >> now, closer to home, let's talk about these apparent discussions between uc berkeley and protesters is reportedly underway as the free palestine encampment continues to get bigger on campus. this comes after an incident broke out last night. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here to talk about that. so what actually happened? >> well, reggie, uc berkeley police say at least two people were hurt overnight following a loud confrontation between dueling protests on campus. up until last week, things had remained well up until last night. things had remained peaceful on this campus. the daily californian, which is the campus student run newspaper, is reporting a pro-palestine protester tried to grab an israeli flag from a counter protester. this happened just before 7:00 last night. that's when they say someone from the free palestine encampment reportedly punched one of the israel counterprotesters that

prompted paramedics to be called to the scene. this incident, coming just days after organizers of the free palestine encampment, reportedly met with chancellor carol chrisw to begin negotiations. although the university would not confirm the meeting, they're calling on the entire uc system to divest and companies contributing to the war in gaza and cal says to date, there has been no disruption of university operations. we will continue to try to respond, per policy, to any and all claims of illegal conduct for harassment and or discrimination, the daily californian says. protesters from the encampment established table barricades on the mario savio steps, with students fearing a raid by uc berkeley police. live in studio lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. colleges in the south bay took part in may day protests and to stand for the people affected by the israel-hamas war. a student activist organization from san jose state held a rally to recognize workers rights and students at uc santa cruz are

the latest to launch their own encampment. organizers say they put a lot of thought into planning a safe and peaceful demonstration. >> we are completely hands off. we are not going to be touching the police. any counter protesters. we are like, we will not be touching anybody. we will not be inciting any violence, any destruction, any destruction . >> students say it feels powerful to add their voices to the growing protests that we are seeing throughout the country. >> in may day rallies and protests across the bay area, they were demanding workers rights and a cease fire in gaza. demonstrators also wanted an end to america's support of israel's response to the hamas attack. there were multiple messages about what organizers say was a show of unity. one of the largest rallies took place in oakland. this crowd of a few hundred marched in a big loop through uptown and back around to frank ogawa plaza, where they gathered for speeches and a big rally in the shadows of city hall. >> the city of richmond is now planning to divest from companies doing business in israel. the vote from the city council last night makes

richmond just the second u.s. city to do so. hayward was the first the city council member who coauthored the resolution says richmond has a pool of roughly $600 million to invest, but only around 7% is likely invested in portfolios that hold companies. the city will divest from defense contractors and arms manufacturers like lockheed martin are obvious examples. but then there are also companies like microsoft and airbnb on the list. >> they have uh- property in the occupied uh- region and advertise it as israel. so that's why there in the on the list critics argue that while divesting can send a message, it's actual impact on corporations isn't typically very substantial. >> now to a story you'll see only on abc seven. a san francisco dog walker says he's keeping his guard up after finding a noose on his front doorstep. terry williams has lived in alamo square since the

70s. he took his own three dogs out for a walk on friday morning. when he returned home, he said he found a plastic bag with his address on it. with this message, didn't have gangster thug. >> and then it had some other negative stuff about black people on there. they had a picture of me with a noose around his neck. they had a noose around one of the little dog figures. >> williams doesn't know who could have left the package, but he gave this surveillance video from a neighbor showing someone approaches home around 1230 that morning. san francisco police say the incident is being investigated as a hate crime at abc seven news. >> we take pride in our mission of building a better bay area, and every day we celebrate breakthroughs that are happening in our neighborhoods. today, we are looking at san jose, where 150 beds will be available starting next year in the city's newest interim housing site called villa del oro. unhoused individuals within one and a half mile radius will get first

dibs. a philanthropist lease the land to the city for just $1 a year for the next ten years, mayor matt mehan believes if more landowners did a similar lease, it could be key to ending the city's homeless crisis. >> all about getting people stabilized faster and connected to the supportive services that enable them to reclaim some control in their lives and to get on the path to greater self-sufficiency. >> the city hopes to get residents on board by enforcing a no encampment zone within a two block radius of this quick build. >> we'll take a live look outside at our oakland camera. right now. we have clear conditions, current numbers right now at the airport showing temperatures mainly in the low 50s. right now we have a light northeast wind, but that will get stronger as we head into the afternoon. so looking at winds right now, you'll see that they're light, but they'll pick up strongest along the coast and we'll find those winds gusting close to 30mph. later on this afternoon. but it will still be

county. nearly 14,000 acres will be added there, including a ridgeline that's sacred to a native american tribe. the area is home to more than 500 native plant species and animals, including tule and golden eagles, and the monuments were first designated by former president barack obama in southern california, more than 105,000 acres will be added to the san gabriel mountains in los angeles county. the white house says the land has important ecological and geological resources like unusual canyons, riparian woodlands and conifer forests, and it's also home to some of the state's most iconic birds, like the endangered california condor. president biden is expected to sign the official proclamation today. >> all right. exciting. thank you. gloria, be careful while going out on hikes. rattlesnake advisory is now in effect throughout the east bay regional park district officials say hikers are spotting more of the reptiles as we experience sunny spring weather. snakes are more

most areas, and that's pretty typical for this time of the year. future weather we are dry friday night. no issues with friday night plans. saturday morning. here comes the rain first early in the north bay around 8 a.m. we're finding a briefly heavy line of showers moving through by noon. we're finding the back end of the steadier rain crossing us and then into the afternoon. we'll see sunshine break out, drier conditions prevail and sunday is totally dry. but looking at rainfall estimates, this is a decent may storm we have here. and again, about a half of an inch to an inch of rain in most areas. the weekend preview showing you saturday is certainly wetter than sunday. we'll have that rain and wind. sunday the sunshine comes back, but both days feature below average temperatures. we do have snow coming to the sierra. our highest peaks saturday night will likely find 1 to 2ft of snow falling so slick conditions early sunday morning. here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you warm sunshine today, tomorrow rain and wind and cooler conditions on saturday.

who are trying to compete in this weekend's swim meet. they're currently not allowed to participate in the north coast high school championships because of an error in their team's submission in 13 swimmers from acalanes high school qualified for the meet when their coach went to submit their names. he encountered issues with the system. now, the coach says he reached out to organizers to get help, but he never got a response. and then the deadline passed. students

holding, and those officers now retreating as they are being pushed out completely out of the encampment by no less than a couple hundred protesters on the encampment, within the encampment, within the confines of that plywood wall. >> and, gloria, you have details on the police activity playing out in the last few hours. >> amanda. the lapd declared a citywide tactical alert as officers in riot gear responded to a massive crowd at ucla. protesters are not leaving even after police declared an unlawful assembly and started getting ready to disperse them not leaving scared of, you know, scare us and you can hear the chants right there. new video shows protesters chanting outside the encampment just before two this morning, police broke through an area and came face to face with protesters. the demonstrators converged on officers, forcing them to retreat, but soon after, police

can be seen detaining some of those demonstrators. >> these students are here peacefully and are just asking for the right to express their ideas on campus, which really is what an academic community should be all about. we want to send the message to ucla uh- administration to the regents of the university of california that students simply have the right to protest to protest peacefully, and to talk about their ideas. >> and all of this comes after a brawl broke out on tuesday night, when counter-protesters tried to break down a pro-palestinian encampment. the violence unfolded for more than two hours before the police response increased. the school has its own police force, so lapd and chp had to wait for them to request help. the university is now vowing to investigate the response, and we're going to take a live look right now from the scene at ucla. and there's a bus right there. looks like some of those

one of the israel counter-protesters, which prompted paramedics to be called to the scene. uc berkeley ■polie say at least two people were hurt. keep in mind, up until last night, things had remained peaceful at uc berkeley. a contrast to arrests and turmoil at other schools across the country. demonstrators behind the encampment are calling on the entire uc system to divest in companies contributing to the war. in gaza. last night's incident between dueling protests, coming just days after organizers reportedly met with chancellor carol christ to begin negotiations. queens university officials have not confirmed this meeting. in a statement made earlier this week, cal says to date, there has been no disruption of university operations. we will continue to try to respond, per policy to any and all claims of illegal conduct for harassment and or discrimination. i reached out to demonstrators occupying the space this morning. they said no one was available to comment about last night's altercation

like afghanistan, syria and russia. griner's exclusive interview with robin roberts aired last night right here on abc seven, and it's available to stream today on hulu. >> the family of a 15 year old pittsburgh girl who was found dead in san francisco is desperately trying to put together a timeline of events leading up to when her body was found. jasmine pellegrini's family says she went for a walk in april 17th in pittsburgh and never came back. the teen had been struggling with depression, anxiety, ptsd and self-harm. there were some sightings, including the pittsburgh baypoint and powell street bart stations and the stonestown target. we spoke with the woman who talked to the teen at that target, and also the man who spotted her body on lobo street. the next day. >> she had a blue post-it in her hand and she said, i need a ride to this place. and i looked down at her post-it note and it had writing on it that said, take the m muni train and get off at embarcadero. and she said,

please take me here. this is the busiest place in san francisco. i just said, honey, i'm sorry. unfortunately, it's not something i can do. >> if somebody would have seen her for hours before, maybe an hour. look at all these houses. look at all these people. >> jasmine's family is hoping surveillance video provides more clues. it's not clear yet how she died. san francisco police say there was no evidence of foul play, and the toxicology report could take several weeks. >> the federal government is suing the city of san francisco for dumping billions of gallons of sewage into the pacific ocean and san francisco bay, according to a new lawsuit filed by the environmental protection agency and california water officials. the releases have been happening since 2016. it amounts to an average of 1.8 billion gallons each year of combined sewage that includes untreated sewage, wastewater and stormwater runoff. the lawsuit also alleges

the city allowed its sewer systems to fall into disrepair, and didn't notify residents about the presence of sewage. an sf puc spokesperson called the suit unfair and told the examiner sewer discharges in the city have been reduced by more than 80% in the last 50 years. nearly 700 pounds of fentanyl. that's how much governor newsom says has been taken off san francisco streets since state police were deployed in the tenderloin one year ago, he says the chp issued more than 6200 citations for illegal activity, made more than 500 arrests and recovered more than 115 stolen cars. the governor also says violent crime and property crime are down significantly due to the action. >> vallejo city hall will reopen today, but business will be by appointment only. this is after students staged a sit in yesterday protesting the recent city council decision to deny a charter school's permit for a new downtown campus. students from elite public school took over the second floor of city hall and allowed and spirited

face off against evan low in the district 16 congressional race in november. they are vying to replace anna eshoo, who is retiring. the recount from the tied march primary just wrapped up. evan low and joe simitian had exactly the same votes. the recount shows lo actually beat simitian by five votes, though it seemed that all three would go to the november ballot. a recount was requested by the santa clara county registrar's office, said recount observers challenge 45 uncounted ballots. the registrar determined seven that were initially uncounted were actually valid. the mix up with that batch had to do with signature matching and boxes. voters forgot to mark, affirming
