you. it is tuesday, april 30th. >> it was breezy yesterday, but really sunny but really sunny. >> it was nice and that's really the trend. the next couple of days it gets warmer and warmer, but the breeze is with us in the afternoon. we're in store for a nice looking forecast once again. here's a live look from the exploratorium camera. we are totally cloud free and we will remain cloud free for the next four days. we have a really sunny pattern coming our way, and that sunshine is really going to help to bring us some above average temperatures as we head into the upcoming afternoon. so take a look at the accuweather headlines today. it's a warmer pattern today. sunny skies, but a windy coast like stephanie alluded to, that coastline will have winds gusting 20 to 40mph, but away from the coast the winds will not be as strong. temperatures this morning. certainly it is cool out there. you want that jacket? you'll have temperatures mainly starting out in the 40s for our current temperatures. but you look at the day planner today, it is nothing but sunshine. so you need that jacket. you need the sunglasses.

we will have those temperatures in the 50s along the coast, but 70s around the bay shoreline and inland. by the way, your sunset now at 8 p.m. so those days are getting longer and longer. 64 in the city today, 72 in san jose, 69, in oakland. hit about 73 degrees later on this afternoon. guys >> thank you drew. developing news in the east bay that could impact your morning commute. emergency crews are blocking off the area around a big fire that burned overnight. this is all happening in downtown concord on sunset avenue and east street near the concord bart station. firefighters say it doesn't look like anyone was inside the commercial building when that fire broke out late last night. abc seven news reporter lena howland just got there, so lena, do you see any flames? >> reggie. no flames at this hour. and the good news is, is that this fire does appear to be out. as you can see right here behind me, we are still seeing quite a few contra costa fire crews on scene. still working to mop up any hot spots and just monitor this situation. i want

to go now to some video taken from the scene overnight. this dramatic this video shows the moment part of the building collapsed. just missing fire crews. intense flames could be seen coming from this large commercial building. at times, even shooting out of the windows. this quickly grew to a two alarm fire. contra costa fire crews. crews say that their crews were on scene for more than two, and a half hours before they were able to put it out. it's unclear what caused the fire in the first place. fire crews say the building was vacant at the time. no injuries were reported. now several streets are closed in the perimeter around this fire. but the biggest impact we're told, will be to the concord bart station because. because the bart parking lot on park street

is closed because of this fire. so again, there are several streets right now closed around the perimeter of this fire. but the main one that you're going to want to keep in mind is the closure of that bart parking lot on park street. that means if you are taking bart today, you're going to want to have to choose another bart station. the closest the closest ones are in north concord. martinez, as well as pleasant hill. now, fire officials say to expect these closures to stay in place throughout the day. so you're going to want to have to give yourself a few extra minutes of travel time. if you are making your way through this area today. for now, reporting live in concord. lena howland abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. developing news now on the pro-palestinian protests on college campuses across the country. the demonstrations are escalating and police continue to make arrests. gloria is at the live desk now with the new information we're learning this morning. >> good morning. stephanie. a tense police standoff is

unfolding at the university of utah. officers ordered the crowd there to disperse. that protest formed yesterday morning and the university said students are not allowed to camp on campus overnight. police are using riot shields and pepper spray as they move in on a new encampment at virginia commonwealth university. officers tore down the camp last night, the university says the protest was violent and violated policies, with final exams about to begin at new york's columbia university, students forced their way into a building overnight and could be seen barricading themselves inside. the school is suspending students who refuse to leave, and just before 4 a.m, administrators announced they are restricting campus access to students and essential staff. cornell university is also suspending students who refuse to move their protests to another location. >> these repulsive scare tactics mean nothing compared to the deaths of over 34,000

palestinians. >> protesters are demanding their universities divest from weapons manufacturers, companies and other businesses that support israel and many are also calling for a permanent cease fire in the israel-hamas war. u.s. officials are asking for a temporary pause in the fighting. the only thing standing between the people of gaza and a cease fire is hamas. secretary of state antony blinken says israel's latest proposal for a temporary cease fire to release hamas hostages is generous. but blinken says israel still must do more to get more humanitarian aid into gaza. stephanie gloria, thank you. >> you can follow our coverage of the college campus protests here in the bay area and across the nation over on our website, abc seven news.com. >> today is the last day of earth month, and we're learning that governor newsom is about to take the fight against climate change to the vatican. the

governor is expected to address the pope and other world leaders at a conference in a few weeks. climate change was also a focus of the governor's visit to china in october. his trip ended with an agreement that california and china would work together to cut greenhouse gas emissions. governor newsom's predecessor also made a climate focused trip to the vatican. that was in 2017, when then governor jerry brown gave a scathing speech on the trump administration's climate policies. the news of governor newsom's visit to europe comes just a few days after a big boost for electric vehicles in our state, he says. there's now one ev fast charging station for every five gas stations in california. there are more than 100,000 public chargers across the state. the state's energy commission estimates we'll need 2 million ev chargers by 2035. >> san francisco mayor london breed is asking voters for hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funding to tackle some of the city's biggest issues. she's proposing a $360

million bond measure for the november ballot. the money would pay for more shelters, family housing and renovations at several hospitals and road repaving across the city. the board of supervisors has to approve the plan before it goes to the voters. as city leaders focus on ways to inject new life into downtown san francisco, some believe the key to revitalization is nightlife. mayor london breed says the number of venues opening is on the rise, but bar owners tell us there are still major struggles. as abc7 news reporter j-r stone found out nightlife could be a breakthrough to building a better bay area >> get a dj or a musician like this chris clauss at san francisco's white rabbit. you could see the crowd will often come new bars like zhuzh near california and polk, is one of nearly 150 new businesses that opened in march in san francisco. >> we believe in the city, and we know that things are going to

turn around, and we have faith that this is one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. >> in fact, the city of san francisco is cutting some of the red tape bar owners tell me city leaders have yanked five grand entertainment license fees for new businesses in their first year, and made those easier to get by rezoning certain areas from residential to commercial, meaning djs at those venues can now play until 2 a.m. instead of 11 p.m. >> as of this week, we have dj seven nights a week and enticing people to come to the city or go to venues like this is what was talked about monday at the sf nightlife and entertainment summit. >> travel experts saying that people are now coming to san francisco because they want to come, not because they have to come. juges aaron paul says sales have been down 30 to 50% at his other establishment, and bar owner friends of his are feeling it even worse, but he's still optimistic. like city officials, i truly believe that

doppler seven, along with satellite showing you it's a really quiet pattern on satellite and radar. we have high pressure off of our coastline several hundred miles away, but it is continuing to bring a pretty breezy shoreline wind throughout the day today. so along the coast will likely find winds gusting 30 to 40mph away from the coast. not nearly as windy out there. so take a look at the morning drive out the door this morning. we have clear skies. that sun's up here at 615. it will be a very sunny day. temperatures do start in the 40s, but we warm through the 50s and into the 60s by about 11 a.m. so your forecast region by region inland, lots of sunshine today. we'll pop into the mid 70s for daytime highs around the bay, shoreline, upper 60s to near 70 degrees with sunny skies even along the coast it is bright. but again those winds out of the northwest could have gusts close to 30 to 40mph at times. now, if you've been sniffling and sneezing, a big change to the pollen index.

living in fremont. fire investigators are reviewing security footage for clues that fire destroyed more than 50 units at the extra space storage facility, just after six yesterday morning. crews were on scene throughout the day putting out hot spots. abc seven spoke

with one man who has rented a unit there for ten years. he said he had 40 years worth of things inside. >> stuff that is, priceless, my family photos, they're all there. i don't have all the video tapes of my son walking and all that. i mean, they're all gone. everything is gone. >> now, that man believes some people may have been living in units there. the facility owner hasn't commented, and there is no official cause yet. >> capitola will give an update tonight on what its iconic pier might look like when it reopens this fall. it's holding a town hall meeting tonight. a bad storm damaged the wharf in january last year. the city recently made the decision to demolish two buildings that housed a restaurant and a bait and tackle shop. the temporary plan now is to reopen this fall with space for fishing and boat rental services, restrooms and benches. long term plans are still being finalized, and a city proposal could transform san francisco's fishermen.

fisherman's wharf, as we know it, the goal is to bring in better business and experiences. the plans include a wholesale seafood market, an area to see workers processing fish and a food hall. and we could even be seeing new places to visit, like an event center, public spaces, a winery, brewery, distillery and an experimental museum. >> it could be a great attraction for here, especially since these past few years it's been getting a little sparse due to people going out of business. >> the plan will be brought to the fisherman's wharf advisory committee tomorrow. if the board of supervisors ultimately approves the project, the group could finalize design and construction in 5 to 6 years. >> new developments in a story we're tracking in san francisco's west portal neighborhood, supporters of a plan to redesign a busy intersection after a crash killed an entire family are now worried safety improvements may never happen. gloria comes after

the changes were put on hold late last week. >> that's right, reggie, you might have missed it over the weekend, but plans to redesign the area around the intersection of yolo street and west portal avenue were put on hold after local residents and businesses raised concerns. they are worried that the effort to make more space for bikers and pedestrians near west portal station will hurt access to local shops, and that prompted supervisor myrna melgar to create a committee to look into possible changes and also figure out the best way forward. melgar's office says the committee will come to a consensus that works for everyone. but according to the chronicle, some supporters of the changes are voicing their own concerns that the committee is just an attempt to delay or even stop the project altogether. they're pushing for faster action, and the changes that were already proposed. melgar told the chronicle that she hopes a revised plan will go up for a vote at the board of supervisors this summer, and

ribbon cutting on a redesigned area could happen as soon as september, so of course we'll stay on top of the story for you, gloria. >> thank you. >> thanks, gloria. we'll go outside. here's a live look from sutro tower this morning. looking lovely. the accuweather headlines will call this afternoon a warm one with sunshine, but the coast will be windy. we'll have winds from time to time, 20 to 40mph there through friday. we get this warm sunshine in the forecast, but over the weekend we do have to include some light showers as an area of low pressure moves into northern california on saturday. we'll show you that in one second. your weather wellness today. your air quality is good. grass pollen is high. your top allergens, not only grasses, but oak and cedar trees. your uv index is an eight today that is very high. the sun will be strong today with lots of sunshine to wear that sunscreen. here's a look at the winds today. you can see along the coast it is quite active, but as you move away from the coast, those winds really drop off. so this wind event is not widespread, but still close to

the coast. we will have those winds close to 40mph later on this afternoon. so we have a lot of sunshine on the way. 64 in the city, but a windy 58 in half moon bay. we'll hit 72 in san jose. that feels very pleasant today. 75 in concord, 73 in napa will hit about 66. in san mateo overnight. tonight, we'll keep those clear skies a little bit of a breeze along the coast, and temperatures in the upper 40s to the lower 50s for daytime highs. now, future tracker temperatures will experience a warming trend over the next couple of days by thursday, that's certainly the pick of the week. widespread 70s and 80s for daytime highs. but then as we head into the weekend, we see a significant cooldown as low pressure moves in here. here's future weather showing you by saturday. there's that low on top of us daytime highs in the 50s and 60s with some light showers on saturday. rainfall amounts look less than a quarter of an inch right now. looks like it's a pretty fast mover. sunday. we should be able to salvage a nice end to the weekend with drier weather

saturday, a thief swiped a colony kept by an urban beekeeper in oakland's rockridge neighborhood. it happened when she went inside her house for a moment during a public honey tasting she was hosting. the stolen hive had more than 15,000 live honeybees and their queen. >> i lost a colony and it was very heartbreaking to see the children that day coming to check out the bees. and they didn't get to do that. they they learned about theft. >> beekeeper susan donahue says the bees are probably dying because whoever took the hive isn't a beekeeper. she feels certain this urban bee heist was a drive by crime of opportunity. >> an annual dog surfing championship will be returning to pacifica in august, but we're learning it was almost wiped out. abc seven news reporter tim johns is following the story of the rough surf and the community push to keep this event going strong. >> over the past eight years,

the annual dog surfing competition in pacifica has become a favorite event for people around the world. scheduled to take place in summer this year was almost called off after organizers say the spiraling cost of doing business in the bay area saw their expenses rise more than 100% in recent years. >> some of the costs are permitting fees. some of the costs are additional expenses that we are required to do, like porta potties, for example, and dumpsters. >> a.k. crump works with taste tv, the company that puts the competition on, he says, in order to offset some of those costs, the organization created a gofundme. it's been so successful that crump says the contest has been saved. welcome news to many, including santa cruz resident steve trotter and his dog rosie. >> rosie started surfing at about eight months old, first when she was seven. she started out on a stand up paddle board and then after that we went to surf some little small waves in santa cruz. and then we've just

been surfing ever since. >> rosie has participated in the event for the last two years, and steve says he was upset when he heard it might have been canceled. >> it's a neat chance to for people to see what you can do with the dog, what a dog is capable of, and the bond that people have that surf with their dog. it's really amazing. >> beyond the good feelings, steve says the competition also supports good causes. each dog competing comes with an entrance fee, all of which supports local animal charities and experience, steve believes, benefits everyone involved. >> there's a lot of camaraderie. everybody's supportive. people get in the water and help each other with the dogs. >> it's a lot of fun with the funding issue mostly resolved, the competition will happen in early august, but for now, organizers say they just want to thank the community. >> a lot of people tell us this is their favorite event of the year, and some people actually arrange their travel plans to the bay area to coincide with it. so you know, it means a lot in pacifica. >> tim johns abc seven news. >> california is getting into

ceasefire deal that would release hostages. and christiane cordero with the latest on those efforts coming up. >> bracing for impact, more damaging tornadoes expected in the middle of the country today. many of the areas already dealing with the aftermath from storms over the weekend. good morning everybody. it's tuesday, april 30th. >> we start with a check on the weather. hi, drew. >> hey. good morning. our weather could not be calmer today. we have a lot of sunshine coming our way. a little bit of a breeze along the coast. here's a live look from our abc seven oakland airport camera. the airport reporting clear skies. in fact, everywhere we have clear skies out there. the big takeaway what to expect today a warmer pattern with sunny skies but a windy coastline. we'll have those winds 20 to 40mph so the winds are not widespread, but where they are strong, they could be gusting close to 40mph this afternoon. out there right now we have a little chill in the atmosphere. most of us are starting the day in the 40s, so certainly the jacket take it with you, but also take the

sunglasses because you look at the day planner and we are in store for full sunshine throughout the entire day. your sun is up here at 614 this morning. we have a bright morning that continues throughout the afternoon. temperatures 50s along the coast bay shoreline, 60s to low 70s and inland will get you into the mid 70s for daytime highs. so 69 in oakland today, 72 in san jose, 64. in the city, a windy 58.5 moon bay. santa rosa a mild 74 this afternoon, guys. >> thank you drew. we're tracking developing news in the east bay where the aftermath of this big fire is causing problems in downtown concord. the fire started last night in a commercial building on sunset avenue in east street. crews are still there right now, and many roads around the fire are closed. abc7 news reporter lena howland is there with the impact as you head out the door. so, lena, how does it look now? >> well, reggie, we are still seeing quite a few firefighters on scene right now. at this moment, they are actively working to put some water on this fire and also working to

mop up any hot spots. the good news, though, is that this fire does appear to be out at this hour. but things were a much different story only a couple of hours ago. the fire quickly grew to a two alarm contra costa. fire officials say their crews were on scene for more than 2.5 hours before they were able to put it out. it's unclear what caused the fire in the first place. fire crews say the building was vacant at the time. no injuries were reported. an intense moment was caught on video when a chunk of the wall fell off and this dramatic video taken over night shows the shows that moment when part of the commercial building collapsed, just missing fire crews, flames could be seen coming from this large commercial building at times even shooting out of the windows. fire officials say to expect several road closures throughout the day around this

area, with heavy traffic congestion just in the last hour , police expanded road closures in the area to include clayton road and oakland avenue, where they are expecting heavy traffic westbound clayton road and grant street, park street and grant street. colfax and concord boulevard, east street and concord boulevard, first street and sinclair avenue. but the biggest impact will be to the concord bart station. since the bart parking lot on park street is closed because of the fire. that does mean if you are taking bart today, you'll want to leave your car at home or choose a different bart station. your closest options are going to be the north concord martinez station or pleasant hill. so a good reminder that you're going to want to have to take a few extra minutes if you are passing through this area and prepare for delays. for now, reporting live in concord. lena howland abc seven news thank you. >> lena. leaders in the north

bay say they're seeing progress in their fight against homelessness. napa county is sharing the first results from this year's point in time count. the county says the total number of unhoused people dropped 18% compared to january of last year . the number of people spending the night on the street dropped 42, with more people staying in shelters in the south bay. big changes are coming to the salvation army campus in san jose. the fourth street facility is getting a makeover. the charitable group will open a temporary 74 unit shelter for existing residents of the immanuel house, immanuel house itself will be rebuilt and expanded to 112 beds. a community member donated $1 million to help fund the $4 million project. >> we have a concentration of wealth that's nothing else like it in the world, and yet we have not solved this homeless problem . we're trying, and it's only through partnerships with the city, with the county, with other nonprofit providers,

especially the ones that are going to provide the on site services. we all have to kind of work together to make this work. >> the salvation army will keep the temporary housing in place for ten years. during the renovation of the entire campus, a new shelter that will serve as a central hub for the unhoused is now under construction in vallejo. the city broke ground yesterday on its first navigation center at broadway and commercial street. once completed, it will have 125 beds. the center will provide shelter, case management services, access to social and medical resources, as well as job training programs. >> the state of california will soon have its own version of the opioid reversal drug naloxone. yesterday, governor newsom announced that the state has agreed to a partnership with amneal pharmaceuticals. now, under this deal, the state would pay $24 for a two pack of its new generic version of the product. that's 40% below the current market price. it will be

distributed under the state's prescription drug label, cal rx s this morning. >> pressure is growing for israel and hamas to accept a ceasefire deal that would release more hostages. a new proposal would provide a 40 day truce and bring dozens of people home. abc news reporter christiane cordero has the details of the deal. >> meetings with mediators in the middle east today has led to one urgent message to hamas from the biden administration. take israel's latest deal. the proposal, a 40 day pause in fighting combined with a release of potentially thousands of palestinian prisoners, according to a top british official in exchange, according to the new york times, israel has dropped its previous demand of 40 hostages and is now willing to accept 33. pressure has grown in the days since hamas released new videos showing hostages speaking under duress, including israeli american keith segal. his daughter is demanding a deal. >> stop the talking and start the actions. >> secretary of state anthony
