my kids never met my father, obviously, who died before they were born. but they got to meet my mom. and they got to meet my mom because my brother and sister and i went to court to get guardianship over our mother to keep her from killing herself. she was so happy at the time she wasn't happy, but she ended up being so grateful that she was able to make it to the other side because we intervened. patrick kennedy with book profile and mental health courage sunday night 8 eastern on c-span q and a you can listen to q and a all of our podcast on our free c-span now app. ♪ ♪ >> house will be in order. >> this year c-span celebrates 45 years of covering congress like no other. since 1979 we've been your primary source for capitol hill.

overestimated what mike was capable of doing. i also think some people felt that maybe i was one, that we ought to be shut down the governmentnt before the second g omnibus bill but that's a disagreement s that shouldn't he been surprising. >>ll is it surprising or problem to you that it appears that democrats will vote to table a motion to vacate and essentially give mike johnson votes needed to avoid that removal from the speakership if this does actually come up? >> well, you're right. it is bothersome and the problem is not everybody will stick with the majority of republicans. i would bet 190 out of the 220 republicans want mike johnson to be speaker more than anybody else. but the traditional rule is, once majority republicans get together, everybody sticks with it. we have about -- whatever it's going to be, my guess isyb 10 to 15 republicans who are going to break with

for the democrats to stick with them. something we better figure out by next january. we cannot be have it become commonplace in which to elect a speaker unity democrat votes. ask college campuses your reaction to the events overnights removing the protesters that occupy the whole columbia university and the clashes out at ucla. protesters encounter protesters eventually after several hours being separated by the lapd. >> it is something that had to be done. it is disappointing. a couple comments on it. as i understand that they look into it, many, and many cases most of these protesters are not connected with the university. they are just troublemakers may be they are being paid to be troublemakers, maybe not for they like to shop and case like that the university has a bad rap. the greater problem is our universities and they deal what america is a divided 50% republican, 50% democrats i

7:34 pm
journalism, law, whatever. i think these presidents at universities right now ought to be conscious of that. and realize the leftward ideological tilt of their faculty is one of the reasons why these kids are participating in these stupid protests. >> congressman joining us their public and from the state of wisconsin of the education workforce committee budget, oversight committee does a lot on capitol taking your phone calls this morning before the house is set to come in. about 25 minutes left of him. if you want to join the conversation democrats two 202-748-8000. republicans 202-748-8001. end up in his 202-748-8002. congress most folks call and the anti-semitism awareness act is going to be on the floor today. what is your understanding of what that bill does wb supporting it?

killed. their heads cut off of little children. they are saying israel should be more patient? look, israel has been very patient. the hamas fighters hide behind civilians. height in hospitals and that type of thing where civilian personnel are and inevitably like in any war if the war fighters are hiding behind civilians they're going to be killed but that is entirely the fault of the hamas army which is hiding in the wrong places. and i want to point out that war could end tomorrow if hamas would come out of their stupid tunnels. say here are our hostages. the buddha have a problem at all. it's hard to justify and said they blame israel. nice international go after netanyahu for defending israel
7:41 pm
neighbors come in, kill 1000 people and say were supposed to do nothing? of course he's got to respond. it is incredible the restraint they have exercised against him so far. >> back to the phones this is liza and charlottesville, virginia good morning. twenty-three hello congressman. good morning. i've two questions really quick. my niece attends columbia university. she was a stellar most preparede students far and away above her peers. she got included in this incredibly exclusive school. prepared and more educated than almost anybody i know. they work their tails off to get into the schools. i wanted to ask you what you specifically about their demands? not their behavior but what are they asking for and what do you know and what is your response?
7:42 pm
>> i think they are asking, among other things to do vested from any investments which did they think would favor israel. i think, like a said, a lot of thee. people they are not necessarily students in the first place. i think their demands are citina with hamas or the people in gaza against israel. or feel israel must pay any haprice whatsoever for defending themselves. i think your daughter is going down the wrong path. which is not surprising with times at that age well off children or the upper class or apple upper middle class looking for cause to look for getting sucked into this palestine cause. people come from all over the world to work in israel.
7:43 pm
people complain about the nine states but for some reason the whole world wants to get here but a lot of the world once again to israel. >> is more has been going on since october 7. why do you think the past two weeks have become a flashpoint for protests on college campuses? >> i have no idea why they are more excited for it like i said i believe some of these people are not connected with the university so perhaps at this time people may be getting orders are being paid by somebody and that is why it is happening campus after campus at the same time. another thing i know is a lot of times this is happening at the most prestigious colleges. penn, mit, why is it happening at the most prestigious? why isn't it happening at the university of wisconsin oshkoshn or something because not all the other universes with a country that is why think to a certain extent it may be orchestrated. it is not popping up anywhere
7:44 pm
except for maybe the most well known 20 or 30 t universities in the country. i don't think that is a coincidence. >> orchestrated by who would want to orchestrate something like that? are you talking about international group? >> no. when you have people show up who are not connected with the university simultaneously all around the country you have got to wonder and he thought was active and right a few years ago. inspired by the tragic death in minnesota. it would not surprise me if there are people like the people behind the scenes who push and diva. those sorts of people are saying we're going to have a riot and such and such a week. like ie said i think these riots are demonstrations have international consequences. because it encourages people in other countries to think group
7:45 pm
or a problem in america and their people supporting hamas of realizing we are a country of 350 million people a handful at columbia or handle university of michigan or some or demonstratee it is really not a lot. it's not even a significant share of the campus of columbia. stuart you mentioned michigan and rochester, michigan kathleen is a republican, good morning. >> yes, good morning. am i on? see what yes you are on. >> i wanted to ask you gentlemen, now a note prior to october 7 i think that's the date, prior to that day it's over a year or so to be aware of the tunnels that israel and netanyahu are tenting with. but how palestinians were coming over and raising havoc.
7:46 pm
we knew about it, why didn't diy do some preventativedi measures? >> i think you got that. >> guest: hindsight is alwaysds 2020. i think they are there for their monitoring was going on. as anderson at the time the israelis are more concerned about missiles and that sort of thing coming over from lebanon. i'm sure in time to be plenty of internal investigations going on in israel in which somebody's going to get the blame. their intelligence and breakdowns all the time. in the united states made a huge intelligence breakdown on 911. whileow israel had it's own intelligence breakdown i'm sure that something to look into. spewow what about tennis for the house comes in for the day will take viewers there for gavel to gavel coverage when they do. until then your phone calls with congressman glenn republican from the state of wisconsin. this is joel in michigan, good

morning. >> caller: good morning. >> i knew that i apologize. >> first of all your representative the last time he was on i was the last caller might source your archives pretty called me an idiot and said that i should create the constitution. i have two medical degrees. we did not discuss involve the constitution. >> host: was your question today? >> caller: it has again to do with republican hypocrisy. my question is this, mike mccarthy and jim jordan were issued subpoenas. they never responded. now, when they became head of their division or whatever you call it their first words we
7:48 pm
d will use subpoenas to get what we want. what is the difference? >> congressional subpoenas? >> there is a difference when you subpoena on think and speak for themselves. >> mckinley mill, california dave independent good morning. >> caller: good, morning. just to back up with the congressman said, saw the result of the survey found over only 7% of the faculty members in our colleges and universities themselves as conservatives. it is no wonder these students being radicalized when they only get exposed to a narrow limited set of political and ideologicar viewpoints.ie if it were up to me i would require in order to get another dime of taxpayer money these

colleges and universities to should submit to requirements. one, take a course on the holocaust. so they get some understanding of what the jewish people been subjected to. maybe they will notice some similarities between what's happening here now what was happening in nazi, b germany before the jews were rounded up and herded into concentration camps where they were systematically exterminated in ways not the segment to the ways hamas exterminated 1200 israeli civilians many of them children and babies on october 7. the second requirement will be to require at least universities and colleges adopt affirmative action programs to attract more conservative faculty members. so the students at these universities get exposed to diversity of ideological and political viewpoints.
7:50 pm
the thinking critically and independently. it's more important they are taught how to think and what to think. so easily indoctrinated i do feel universities ought to aim for more ideological diversity. around the washington area people registered whether they are republican or democrat. it would be nice if someone would do a study of some of the local universities around here. either around the country, george washington, georgetown what have you looked your journalism faculty or your law school faculty. even english literature faculty. is there diversity of thought there? instead they got hung up on diversity of where your great-great-grandparents were born with a born in mexico? where the born in france? were they born in the philippines?
7:51 pm
all of my faculty are 90% of your faculty on my getting my students a broad based opinion? the answer of course with a few exceptions around the country is overwhelmingly left wing. it affects what they are telling the kids. and i think in general if i had to stereotype the democrat, the left wing is filled with unhappy people do not like america. being the statistics will show that they are. because they are on happy fundamental changes a revolution in the united states. if you think about it we are the envy of the world. it should not be happening but you look at the news every night for people streaming over the mexican border. the whole world wants to get here. despite the fact the whole world wants to get here our universities are filled up with faculty who too often think like
7:52 pm
what barack obama america has to fundamentally be change for. >> are two reasons i think left-wingers are unhappy with america? one or two reasons why it left-wingers are unhappy with america? >> i think maybe sometimes they're overly concerned about money. so as the result they are a little bit more subject and i think secondly inou general peoe who are less likely to believe in god are more likely to be unhappy and statistics will show our student less likely to believe in god requires couple months left congressman glenn grossman before the house comes in for the day 10:00 a.m. eastern for morning our legislative business it is 10:0u could of course watch that on cspan2. this is derek waiting in lakeland in independent good morning. >> good morningnd c-span.

"good morning america." hey congressman, what you think the health alliance subcommittee happening today? tell why it's not on your programming for today? >> think usurper. >> i'm sorry i did not hear what your question was. >> it's a hearing that's happening today? one of many h hearings happening on capitol hill. we cannot cover them all. we have a meeting every day we look at the hearings happening. might get the most they would be most interested in but something that occurs on a daily basis is not a scientist more of an art in.you might be interested again there's more hearings that happen every day that we can actually cover.
7:54 pm
not aware congressman? says paul in delaware good morning. es representatives massie and green so they got a call for a vote next week to oust a speaker johnson over his much of the congressman thanks this is a distraction needed right now. and how he feels about this picture right it is a distraction for there so many problems in the country that we could be talking about inset i don't blame them for this program, every program is asking congressman how you're going to vote on the motion to remove the speaker johnson pro going to keep in there. if seven months ago before the election. now is not the time to switch headhe coaches. it takes ao while for the head coach to get his sea legs and
