niko efstathiou, a journalist based in athens. he told me more earlier about what the situation was. we he told me more earlier about what the situation was.— the situation was. we have phenomenons _ the situation was. we have phenomenons like - the situation was. we have phenomenons like this - the situation was. we have - phenomenons like this happening roughly nine to 20 days a year but never before have we seen such intensity. even today the sky is clear but the dust hasn't settled yet so you can feel it in the sky. here is something interesting about what happened yesterday, it wasn't necessarily the number of particles in the sky and we have had more intense dusty days over in athens, but it was two currents one from the north and one from the south carrying the particles that met over greece and lifted the particles to a certain point in the sky which created this very orange sky that we saw which was incredibly intense.

many people were making carrot —— comparisons with martian landscape. it's something we haven't really seen before in such intensity. there are some health concerns so people have been advised even today to wear masks if they have respiratory problems. these dust particles can cause damages to those that have respiratory problems. we have to be a bit careful. respiratory problems. we have to be a bit careful-— a bit careful. what was it like t in: to a bit careful. what was it like trying to move _ a bit careful. what was it like trying to move around - a bit careful. what was it like trying to move around with l a bit careful. what was it like i trying to move around with that concentration of dust in the air? it concentration of dust in the air? it was quite difficult. i walked my dog late at night so after the sun had set. people could really feel the dust particles in the sky. it was quite a quick walk. it was quite uncomfortable and even today you can really see most of the cars look like they have been drifting in the desert. they are covered in sand. it is closer to the ground today than it was yesterday so it was quite uncomfortable. there are tens of thousands of debts in europe every

say that there is a concern in the mediterranean so more scientists appointing to the direction that we might be seeing things like this more frequently and we have to be more frequently and we have to be more prepared to be ready and also put advisory systems in place so that when days like this happen people can equip themselves with maths or move around less frequently so that they stay safe. particularly those who are vulnerable. to bhutan now, wherei billion dollars has been been pledged to protect tigers at a sustainable finance conference — marking a historic moment for global conservation efforts. 10 countries have made a decade long commitment to maintain current global efforts to increase the tiger population. rachel mcadam has more leaders and ngos gathered at the tiger conservation coalition conference in bhutan earlier this week to raise money and highlight the key role that tigers

and their habitats play in the well—being of our planet. in the final statement from the conference, ten countries made a billion—dollar commitment to enhance tiger conservation efforts and increase the tiger population, which is now recovering after years of decline. in 2010, scientists found that over a century tiger populations had declined from around 100,019 ten to just over 3000 in 2010. so asian countries decided to try and double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022. and we can take a look at the situation as of last july with nepal, bhutan, russia and china all increasing their tiger populations, taking the overall tiger population in the region to more than 5500, according to estimates from the world wildlife fund. stuart chapman is the chair of the tiger conservation coalition, and here is his reaction to those figures.
2:55 pm
that is a huge conservation success against a backdrop of climate change and declining populations of other species. tiger conservation is an expensive business. they are a big cat that needs a very large area in which to live, and as a top predator they come into conflict with people and livestock. so in order to conserve tigers, we need to also have the finance in place to ensure that they have a future in the wild. this conference is the first step in a ten year process and the prime minister of bhutan described it as a watershed moment, saying that tigers represent much more than just endangered animals, that they represent the health of our forests and resilience of our entire ecosystem. the prime minister also said that, more importantly, tigers represent our collective well—being and that of our future.
